They probably just represented the corrupt members of the ruling or priestly class, who would take sexual pleasure among the common women.

The Hebrew word is נפל or nephîyl. Literally means "a feller, that is, a bully or tyrant" and is translated in the KJ as "giant". Many newer translation choose to leave the word untranslated as Nephilim. Controversy over the interpretations of the verse Genesis 6:4 in which the Nephilim appear. Some believe that they were the offspring of "sons of God" who they say are fallen angles and human women. Other read the verse to say that there and giants and then there was ALSO the intermarrying of angels and humans. Other say the "son of God" where righteous men who married unrighteous women. Whichever one you pick, you will find lots of scholars who agree with you.

Personally, I go for the angel/human offsprings. That explains the rest of the story of Noah. The flood was not so much to wipe out "bad morals" as it was to wipe out "bad genetics". God needed to clean the gene pool, and he could not do that by changing people's hearts. He had to wipe out the bad gene pool. As he use a water pool. He saved the only people who were both morally and genetically pure, Noah and his family.
