it isnt about you... he might have tons of issues as far as communicating and maintaining relationships. It may seem "sudden" to you that he changed his tune, but if you look back over the time you have known him, you might see that he began to change his actions and the amount of time he had for you long before it actually came to an end. Looking at it differently might soften the blow for you and you'll see more clearly that you didnt do anything wrong, or to cause his absense.

here are a few options: (1) he doesnt want to mess up your friendship (2) afraid to express his true feelings for you (3)maybe you were wanting more out of your friendship than he wanted (4) maybe he has found someone else (5) ur just that a friend and nothing else to him there were probably some signs that gave you a hint that things were not going to work out between you guys in the previous weeks that you shrugged off

i wish i knew, i know what you mean,
same thing is happening to me.
Then i only make it worse by assumptions
and inquiry & still no answers, so now i
just have to accept that perhaps i did or
said something that upset her, or she is
just tired of me now.
I'm tOO high maintance emotionally so that
may be my answer, so that means it is ALL
my fault and my road has tOO many holes
of wOe for her to understand......
gOOd luck !!!!!

maybe it isn't anything you've said or done. maybe he has feelings for you and isn't sure how to approach you etc... i hope things work out for the best.
