I would have to say they contribute to it but it comes down to a person is responsible for their own actions. It's like you say someone made you cry. But actually no one can make you do anything you do not want to do its called REBT OR rational emotive behavoir
No one is actually forcing those tears. You are chosing to cry yourself. Therefore, you have the control to not cry it you wanted to. Saying that the media is to blame for anrexic and bulimic girls is not really fair. It is sad though that the media and fashion magazine and even our society puts so much pressure on girls to be thin that some girls feel they have no choice but to become anorexic or bulimic. But only they can chose. They can make a choice to get help with their condition which I really hope they do. And I hope that one day the media will see that all sizes can be beautiful not just super skinny people.

I certainly think that the fashion industry and the media must take some blame for all the eating disorders in today's America. Models have routinely been toothpick thin to the point of appearing scrawny and the media promotes slim, trim, emaciated look. Even insurance companies use a height/weight chart that is unrealistically low. Self-worth is too often judged by outward appearance. Very few overweight people make it on camera on TV or in the movies and if they do, they are portrayed as buffoons. However, health habits begin at home so parents play a role in how they train their children in dietary habits.

the media cannot be blamed 100% They may play a part, and now that these "pro-anarexia" websites are florishing, you see
that they use pictures of these unrealistic-looking women as
"thinspiration" however the disease itself is a little more complex.

Anorexia nervosa is a condition that causes people to stop eating
as we all know , and other contributing factors to "triggering" this disease are more complex, alot of these girls were molested or
abused when they were younger or grew up in homes where
there was fighting, or mayeb there was a divorce or death of a family member; people who are anorexic use this disease has a way to control their out of control lives; they think that if evevrything else is chaotic, well, at least they can make their
bodies look however they want.

Bulimea nervosa is a little different, people who throw up or
"purge" after they eat seem to maintain and olmost normal weight
they get a satisfaction from throwing up, olmost like a "high".
they obviously idolize these beautiful people they see on tv
but once again, they had something traumatic happen in their lives that triggerd the disease.

There are other eating disorders that dont fit these molds.
Compulsive over eating, restricting diet, starving---yes, people
fast, and they call it a diet--and "eating disorder not otherwise
specified".

I think that some people are just prone to this kind of behavoir
like how some people are prone to smoking, cutting them selves
drinking too much, drugs, ect. so I think the answer is prevention.
While we can't stop people from having bad lives, letting them
feel not alone or not inadequite is important.

Yes, because anorexic and bulimic girls and boys follow very carefully both the fashion industry and the media and what each one does. If the media says that it is best to have a smaller and thinner body, then the boys and girls will do it. In other words, they believe the information and do it immediately without thinking of the positives and negatives of both anorexia and bulimia.

The answer to that question is a definite yes, and I myself had a rough childhood because my mom kept telling me I need to do more sports, dance classes, etc. And there was a REALLY skinny girl who used to be in my class who kept telling me that i was fat so I didn't eat much for awhile and regretted it. So the parents need to be supportive along with other family members and friends. Otherwise, girls and boys will think they have to be as thin as they can, due to people they see and how they look on the television, and will lead to eating disorders. Another reason is that thin is considered in.

The media also needs to know and show the message that not EVERYONE can have "the look" that they are searching for. So technically, it's not JUST the media that's to blame, it can also be peer pressure that's to blame.

No, I don't think so. If someone is actually fit (thin, healthy, not overweight, whatever) than the only reason they would think they're fat is if they have body dysmorphic disorder, which is something you're born with. (BDD is a mental disorder that distorts body image.) If this is the case, then fashion and media aren't what started it, they aren't to blame. I do think fashion and media aren't helping though. I know a lot of people with ed's look at models as "thinspiration", so whenever they get hungry they look at the skinny models' pictures and it helps them not eat. But even if images of skinny people didn't exist (INSANITY!), these people would STILL suffer, still not eat, still purge, etc.

If someone is actually overweight/obese, I still don't think media's to blame if they form an eating disorder. They probably just don't want to be fat. y'know? But again, i'm sure skinny models are only making them feel worse.

i think that it is a combination of society, fashion, the media and how the hollywood portrays the celebrities, the designers that make us ctlothes that do not fit all the people: try a size 0 or 00, as well as low self-esteem. it is a lethal combination that is based upon each other: we blame the desigeners, we blame the media, but in the end we should also blame the whole entire society since it pressure us to look a certain way, and so forth. we are the ones that give into peer-pressure, look up to the super-skinny actresses as our models and believe that being super skinny is the way to be. being comfortable with ourselves as well as the skin we are in is what society takes away from us while depriving us of self esteem-high, that is. it takes more than one factor for anorexia as well as eating disorders to come into being.the fashion and media are part of it-the majority-but the rest is us as well as our self esteem!

Of course who else then to blame,,The media is the strongest tool that could influence the masses and especially the young boys and girls ,the fashion portrays sick , assexual, weak and dumb models as figures which indirectly the new generation view as the norm whom image they should follow while in fact these models are not the norm they are ugly sick people who have eating disorders and who are dumb enough to do such a job of a robot.. Is that what the media wants the young people to be anorexic and dumb with no opinion and no presence?

2006-10-14 01:03:53 · answer #10 · answered by kitty 2 · 0 1

Absolutely, the media is one of the biggest contributor's to the problem. You look at magazines, books, tv anything that people can see and you want to be just like that. Even slightly overweight people are always picked over for significant others, parts in movies and I could go on and on. Show me a t.v. show that doesn't have very slim actresses that are the STARS (not the side kicks) and I'll start to rethink my position. I've been on both spectrums of being thin and overweight and people in general really look at you differently. Now that I'm loosing weight I'm getting the stares again from guys and it makes me want to throw up--HELLO--I'm the same person I was at a size 5 and a size 20--for reasons other than that I've started to loose the weight and I'm already down 6 sizes.

Girls and Boys alike want to be accepted in to whatever is popular and if their size is stopping them what do they turn to? The people who have some of the biggest influence and that is sad, its not their parents or peers, its who is on tv or in magazines.
