Diamond Dave is the clear winner, IMHO. Sammy is a meat & potatoes singer without an ounce of outrage or transgression in his soul. DLR's voice may be thin but he had an original style and a unique sense of fun. Also, he and EVH worked well together, whereas Sammy has made the whole band more pedestrian.

I think Roth - maybe because I was into Van Halen from their first album, and Roth's voice and style were an important part of their music for me. I also think that Roth was so much more of a showman than Hagar. I agree with the poster above who said that Van Halen started going downhill fast when Hagar took over the vocals. Roth was a dynamic, distinctive singer, and Hagar was a run-of-the-mill, dime-a-dozen rock & roller.

Hagar...because Roth did a country remake, redoing some of the Van Halen songs

This is a question that will be argued forever. I used to think Sammy was better, but after getting all of the Van Halen albums, I now think that David Lee Roth was better. When Sammy joined, the songs became more serious, and kind of lost their party atmosphere. He sang mostly about love, and DLR sang mostly about partying and women. I saw them three times, and Sammy was the singer, each time, and they still rocked.

Roth was amazing back in the beginning....i loved roth with Vanhalen
but when hagar joined it was a perfect choice for vanhalen to take hagar..

I guess i will vote for Roth and Hagar...i will even vote for Gary cherone....Vanhalen 3 was an amazing cd...it didn't get the recognition as the other cds

David Lee Roth, it just seemed that they jived together, where Sammy already had his own style and changed Van Halen and it became Sammy Halen

Roth was definitely the better frontman for VH
don't get me wrong...hagar is awesome...he didn't need VH...VH needed him...if it weren't for hagar they would've been all done.
it's sad tho...i saw roth recently on a talk show and he looks like a real geek now....i think the VH era is over...but sammy will keep on rockin'!

i like david lee roth. that's when i first heard the band i guess. poor reasoning, but i'm more old school than i thought. i do like sammy hagar as well, but i can't see sammy hagar performing anything but sammy hagar songs "i can't drive 55".

Sammy, for sure. He could, and still can, belt out a song. Roth was good, but a bit too "queer" for my taste.
