the ports of the chimeny cowl getting blocked , forceing smoke back out of the stove.

yes cj the prob was not enough ventilation in the living room we had to have a air vent installed that solved the prob .I sound rediculous but it really did solve the prob an d it made the fuel burn more evenlly too hope this helps, san

My parents have a wood/coal fire. They have the chimney swept twice a year because the wood causes a resin build up, and the coal leaves soot in the chimney which blocks it. Years back I remember trying to finish my homework as the fire brigade were putting a chimney fire out (that was the before they had regular sweep visits!). Also, depending on which way the wind blows, they get 'smoke blow backs' into the house. Usually when all the doors are shut! So good ventilation is a necessity.
There are a lot of UPVC cleaning materials for the frames, it's a hazard of having real fires!. Keep warm.
