I don't understand your question. Are you saying that Santa's traditional green garb is a sign that Christmas has always been about material goods? I'm pretty sure that the green garb was supposed to represent life in the middle of winter - see below.
Pretty much ever since folks decided to celebrate Christmas, it's been about the feasting and the gift exchange. This is because most of the Christmas traditions you recognize were co-opted from various pagan Winter Solstice festivals (Saturnalia chief among them) - the early Church hoped that doing this would help make the pagans more willing to convert to Christianity. (This is also how we got the Easter Bunny.) So it may have become a lot easier to procure tons of material goodies in the middle of winter, but "Christmas" has never universally been the somber austere affair people seem to think it used to be.
But you are correct that Coca-Cola's artwork is what cemented Santa's garb as being red. The Clement C. Moore poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" only lists him as being dressed in fur from head to toe.

The way I understand it Coca cola invented Santa for advertising and it went from there. And yes Christmas is way to commercialized these days. The season is getting very trumped up about all the wrong reasons!

Yes, Old St. Nick was green but then Coca Cola made him red in order to use a color from the American flag. A lot of other companies have done the same thing- use colors from the American falg for marketing (Campbells, Tide, McDonalds).

Most people do not know what Christmas is about, as to why Christan's began to celebrate it or when they began to celebrate it!
How did it come about that a tree was brought into the house or lights/candles put upon it? Why the name Santa Claus? How did gift giving become a part of this?
There is a lot of lip service to Christmas, but that is all.
Too many, it is just a time to make money, using the occasion.
The idea about what it is about is not even concerned.
