I went to a comedy club for my birthday and for the most part had a horrible time.
When I made reservations for my group, the woman on the phone didn't make clear that there was a two item minimum, she said there was a two item 'maximum'. "Maximum?" I thought she was talking about taking items into the club, asked her if that's what she meant, and she said yes! You can imagine my extreme annoyance when my group gets there, and we're expected to cough up over $15 for drinks! To rub salt in the wound, the food and drinks were absolutely horrible. Their idea of a strawberry daiquri was artificial flavoring in half crushed ice. ~_~
After that, the comedians came out. The beginning act was this horrible man who told completely insulting jokes, and any time the crowd didn't laugh he'd tell us to f*** off! And he did it about seven times! I was so mad I wanted to leave, and some of my friends felt the same. After that guy got off stage another comedian came on, he was crude, rude, and only moderately funny. The final act was this guy who was apparently famous in the comedy world, and he was the only one who made me laugh.
Comedy clubs, in my opinion, are completely hit or miss. Your experience depends on the club staff, the quality of the establishment, and most importantly the quality of the performers! I will never go back to the club I went to, but I might go to a different one in the future.

Comedy clubs are like restaurants, some you like and some you don't. However, you run the added risk of going to your favorite comedy club, and they've brought in a comic that's bad.
Honestly, it depends on your likes/dislikes of comedic styles.
If you are going for the first time, find a club that has a lot of comics on that night. That way, you have a good chance to be entertained. You also should go to a club that has some local talent. If you find a comic, that's local, that you like, you can follow that comic to different clubs and find the best one. That way, as you go to different clubs, you know you like at least one comic, so you'll be entertained.
I like Improv myself, and I don't mind going to clubs that have students from Improv comedy classes in them. Some are bad, some are good, most middle of the road. But occasionally, you find the diamond in the rough.

I love comedy clubs, but you have to find a good one with a great reputation. If you can find a good one, then you don't have to worry about them getting crappy comics. But they are a lot of fun, and everyone can use a good laugh!
Another great thing is usually they let people in 16 or older (21 to drink) and sometimes even serve food!

The two-drink minimum is a bit of a hassle, but yu are in for a good time.
Get a seat close to the stage if you want to become part of the comedian's rap, OK; otherwise, hide in back.
