Southern Irlend is independant of uk but part of the brisitsh isles gepraphicaly.
QUOTE
Southern Ireland was the twenty-six county Irish state envisaged by the Government of Ireland Act 1920. It had a legislature, the Parliament of Southern Ireland. This Act formally and controversially partitioned the island of Ireland in two, Northern Ireland (covering approximately fifteen percent of the island, in the northeast) and Southern Ireland (covering the remaining territory to the south and west). Both were given bicameral parliaments and separate executives. Two links joining both states were provided for; a single Lord Lieutenant, the representative of the King, was to be the source of executive authority in both states, while a Council of Ireland was provided for, with promises to the nationalist side that it would become an embryonic all-Ireland Parliament.

I am an American, and I know that the only part of that island that is part of the UK is Northern Ireland, but I can't speak for others.
I think, honestly, that a lot of the confusion comes from the fact that they are countries where English is spoken. From my experience, a lot of people are also confused about Scotland, thinking it's off floating alone somewhere else, and they think there should be another island somewhere for Wales. When you try to explain the real geography to them, they get confused. I am just a little mystified that people in the actual UK don't know this stuff :)

It is not part of the UK. Northern Ireland is part of the UK. Ireland is Ireland and I hate it when people think it is part of the UK. I have nothing against the UK but Ireland is its own separate country.

The true irony is, that after 85 or so years of violence, and centuries more of resistance and hatred (since the English conquered them in the 16th century - originally a protestant religious crusade btw), Ireland has the best chance for unified peace in a long time..... All in time for everybody to give up sovereignty and become a petty province of the UNITED STATES OF EUROPE! So after all the bloodshed, they are both just going to be neighbouring states within the same country once more! How pointless the whole affair has been.....

Yikes...I'm from one of the most geographically-illiterate countries in the world (the USA) and I've always known that only Northern Ireland was part of the UK. I hope the UK doesn't stoop to our level in this department!

No. Isn't Southern Ireland just called Ireland or Eire. The other is Northern Ireland and I always call it Northern Ireland or "Ulster'. My ancestors came from Ireland but I couldn't say if it was north or south, because years ago wasn't it just one country? Maybe it could become one country again. Germany did.
