Hi Princess...there was a very odd question before, but thank goodness the Yahoo suits got rid.
I remember Norwich in the early-mid sixties...the big word then was 'didekoys', and when fairs came, there were always morons from the estates wanting to mix it - but methinks the hard upbringings and the life you led then had the edge, and most of the so-called 'normals' went home with sore (and split) heads.
Now, of course - it might be argued your bad name came from the 'weekend gypsies' who would get on the road far from where they live (with their shiny travelmotor) and think they were romany cats, but with an attitude caked up by stories in the worst right-wing tabloids...remember the pseudo-hippie 'travellers' from the early 70's onwards. The landfill site/trash dropping thing indeed is bad - but I think that's a public habit we all tend to have.
And the usual vexed British see it this way; you're not 9-5 people, and with a rule-book of existence all your own (that's why some of us poor souls try to do it come summer, be we students with long hair or just eager to get it out of our systems - we will spend a fortnight or longer thinking we're living the roman way - when in fact we're being laughed at).

The owner Mike Jefferies is so uptight about the brand(s) keeping in tune with the image he is trying to create. He pretty much considers this image an "All-American" image. This image includes: skinny beautiful girls, and built handsome guys. In an article [link below] he talks about how he doesn't make his clothes to fit fat people. However I think he has somehow, kind of justified this because he has sizes that doesn't quite fit with his "image". Other than that here are some other reasons that people hate abercrombie. 1. People believe that the company is racist: A while back they had law suits about people not being hired because of their ethnicity. This is really not the case now because the company embraces diversity. This is all they talk about in the interviews and now you can walk into a store and see some minorities. Like me! 2. The clothes are overpriced.: Yeah people are not cool with the fact that a t-shirt made out of cotton will cost them 40 dollars....especially when you can get clothing made out of the same material for a cheaper price (same with the style). 3. They don't like the fact that the music is loud and that the stores are sometimes heavily spritzed in the cologne of the moment. 4. Their are no benefits if you sign up for their credit cards. 5. It is a "knock off" of Ralph Lauren's Polo line. 6. People don't like the whole "prep" thing. 7. People believe that it lacks originality...it makes the same stuff each year. 8. Apparently TOO many people wear it? and their are others too sooo....yeah Hope this helped! Check out the article!

Like you, I am a traveller, bred and born and proud of it. All my life I have seen and listened to remarks made by the gorgers and it is sickening that they are allowed to get away with it. If some of those remarks were made about coloured people there would be hell to pay but say those same things about a traveller and everyone jumps on the bandwagon and agrees that we are scum of the earth without taking the time to get to know the real person. My wife is a schoolteacher but I, with very little education to my name can get on a pc and run rings round her, I can build my own pic's and have done from scratch so I'm not bad but if I were to go for a job in one of the big offices as shall we say a computer operator what chance would I have of getting it if they knew my heritage? None at all I guess. As for the ones who made the remarks about your spelling let me tell you that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Before some wag decides to ask if my wife wrote this the answer is no and I didn't need to use spell checker either.

Today in England we have a small population that commits crime, vandalism, etc and we realise there will always be this 'bad' element.

My view of Gypsies is that the bad element is in the vast majority, i have absolutely no problem with travellers per se and this country has thousands of travellers all over the world, try any student on a gap year.

My view of Gypsies is them travelling around and camping illegally on council or private property, damaging that land and leaving with a huge amount of rubbish dumped.

The local crime seems to rise, the vehicles don't have tax or insurance, the people don't pay council tax to the areas where they stop so we the residents are paying for the clean up/schooling/facilities, etc.

Please, please, please, just be honest, pay your fair share of tax, don't park up where you are not allowed to and leave the place clean and tidy.

If you do these simple things as the rest of us do you will welcomed rather than hated as you are now.

This is a very difficult one to answer as there is a big divide.
People only see the down side of the Gypsy culture, of using land for campsites then when they leave there is always rubbish and mess behind. Maybe if there was a way of bridging the gap which seems to exist between those who travel from town to town and those who live in fixed homes.

You must remember that we have a lot of angry people these days. A lot of what we react to has everything to do with 'First Impressions'. I am usually very happy when I am traveling because I love, love, love, to see new places and new faces. But, you will also be aware that most people you meet in Hotels, Inns, restaurants, Gas Stations, and anywhere else you stop are people who don't travel. They are there to assist us but do this; Sit down and listen to the way most travelers treat these people. I have been a Chef for over 25 years and it always amuses me when people come in and treat my servers like servants and by bus boys or girls like they are beneath them. If this was something that happened to you day in and day out you tend to be on the defensive.
It takes a little bit of time on your part but when I travel I go out of my way to be overly kind to everyone I speak with. They may reject you at first but, a kind voice and a tone of thank yous and pleases and a compliment or two seems to warm them. It's a bit like an animal that has been treated badly. When they meet a person who shows them a kind hand they tend to slobber all over you. Now, I wouldn't want any one to slobber on me but being a Gypsy has very little to do with the way one is treated.
Be above the rest and show them how truly happy you are to meet them and share their time and town with them. But, please don't be fake about it!! Treat them the same way you wish to be treated. Now a days, there is very little Customer service so you need to make it yourself. Stop assuming people will be kind because you are paying them for something and start assuming people will be kind only when you are.
I am a Gypsy and have run into this problem but I find that, even today, people are kind and loving. They just need a bit of encouragement from the rest of us.

Good Luck and Blessed Be

i dont hate anybody, i find it hard to tolerate people filled with hate.
We are all different, thats what makes us unique. What i often see is that people are not happy with the fact that the gypsies come into certain areas, leave lots of garbage, then leave (having made no contribution to maintaining the beauty of the neighbourhood, such as paying tax which locals all have to pay with their hard earnt money). i've seen programmes on tv where people are really upset about that. otherwise, what you do with you life, as long as it doesnt hurt others, is your business sweetheart. Loving and being loved, involves sharing, most people feel that gypsies do not share, they just want to take the benefits of a nice tidy field and "trash it" and leave once the mess is created (for others to clean up).
Having said things from both angles, i understand prejudice, i'm a "foreigner" a professional one, but most british are so full of dislike for anything other than what is familiar, they focus on the obviousness of me being a foreigner, before finding out that i'm a professional person with something to contribute.

I don't think everyone hate gypsies. There is a high degree of distrust because too many times the business dealing of gypsies with outsiders has not been honest. It takes time to build trust, and if you are traveling, you are never anywhere long enough to build trust. Strangers are never unconditionally trusted.

As far as my experience with gypsies or if you like politically correct.. travellers..you can call your self what ever you choose..it will not change you one bit ..you are what you are ..selfish ..inconsiderate . trouble maker ..litter every where and go..illegally enter in properties that don't belong to you ..stay until you are kicked out by court order Evan then you kick up a stink ..and this applies to most not all i don't want to generalise but there are thieves .. by the way ..it's not just one incident ..happens every where ..with your kind..sorry but true

I don't hate Gypsies. I may not like a Gypsy, but, it won't be because they are a Gypsy or black or a Muslim or any other group of people. It is silly to hate someone just because of their lifestyle or colour or creed or religion or what country they were born.
