Depends - some rebuilt and paid the former slaves a wage - others had nothing so they sold their land and moved on - and many others never came back from the war...

Most of them went back to their plantations and tried to pick up the pieces of their lives. They started farming again, a lot of them still had the freed slaves stay with them. Unlike the school books will tell you, the majority of these plantation owners did care about their slaves, and did take very good care of them. The slaves didn't want to leave the lives they had, and the security of jobs and homes and someone to watch over them.

Many of them went out of business. Since the slaves were all free, they didn't have anyone to do all the work - and many couldn't afford to pay them any kind of wages.

thay had to pay the slaves some left after being freed some staid
