I need to buy a convertible car seat for my five month old son who is growing out of his infant carrier. I was thinking about getting the Britax Marithon, but I'm not sure about it. I read an earlier posts that said your child might get sick of being in a car seat as they get older (when they like four or so). Would I be better off buying a Britax model that will hold my son until 40 pounds and then buying a booster seat later on? That's probably what I will do, but what do you folks think?

I was in the same boat a few months ago. I was trying to rationalize the expense and asked a friend what she did. She recommended an Evenflo model. It is super comfortable looking and my daughter loves it. Way cheaper and still safe.

It's a Evenflo Triumph. It goes up to 40 lbs. So once he reaches that age I would just get a small booster (that's what I'm going to do). I hope this helps. Good luck.

(They carry them at Target and Babies R Us)

Yes the Fisher Price is made by Britax but it sits funny in the forward facing position (very upright compared to others). I would stick with the Britax brand. The Evenflo Triumph series has a weird way to adjust the harness that can be very annoying in the winter time. Also the Britax brand includes a part of the seat that locks the seatbelt into place so it doesn't come loose. The Roundabout only goes up to 40lbs and the Marathon, Decathalon and Boulevard all go up to 65 lbs. It is much safer to keep the kids in the 5 point harness for as long as you can (past 4 years old and 40 lbs if possible). If your worried about your son and his rate of growth and size, then I would get the bigger car seat. Stop by your local babies R Us. They're really helpful when it comes to questions about car seats.

Britax is very expensive considering you will have buy another car seat after........but any car seat is fine if you're buying a new one....there are strict regulations for car seats now so they will make them appropriate and up to standard.

Two links on what to do look for in a car seat for each age.....

When your child outgrows the maximum height and weight of his/her infant seat, you may require a convertible rear-facing seat until your child is ready to be facing forward. Use a rear-facing car seat until:

the baby is at least 9 kilograms (20 lb.)
the baby can pull him/herself to a standing position
the baby is one year old.

Rear-facing seats

All infants should ride rear-facing until they have reached at least 1 year of age and weigh at least 20 pounds. That means that if your baby reaches 20 pounds before her first birthday, she should remain rear-facing until she turns ONE

Check out the Fisher Price Safe Voyage. It's made by Britax, but more reasonably priced and just as safe.

I bought the Cosco Alpha Omega. It's great because it goes up to 100 lbs. I also bought the Eddie Bauer one for Grandma's car, which only goes up to 80 lbs., but it's a little easier to get my daughter in and out of. I bought both at Target for about $120 each.

You can check out info on car seats at the ntsa.gov web-site. It will list if there are any recalls on car seats.
