we are planing on getting engaged in december of this year so two months. i am going to plan a day to propose to her sooner than that. we wanted to get married in the summer of 2007. but things changed and moved it to 2008. becouse my parents thought it was to early and wanted us to get at least another year of college under the belt. so me and my girlfriend talked and wanted to just wait until the summer of 2009. we will both be 21 by then. so that gives us 2years and 6 month of engagement is that too long to be engaged. i also think that will give us more time to be with each other and learn each other better.

in her tradition we can live together until marrage.

You ARE engaged! Engagements start the moment two have elected to be married at some time in the future. As far as the time of an engagement, if MORE were to take it slower, as you are doing, there would be a lot less divorce. Good for you. And, engagements do not start with a ring, they start with a "yes, I want to marry you."

I tend to agree with your parents... whats the rush... although being engaged doesn't hold you to anything legally binding, it may help keep you honest to one another. Personally I was engaged a year and 2 months before we got married. Your both very young still so no need to rush anything.

Nothing's "too long" unless you feel it is. Had you been in your 30s, I would say that 2.5 years to be "engaged" is way too long... But at your age, you still have plenty of time to finish your education and tie up all the "loose ends" before making the plunge. Congrats, and good luck.

You guys need to get married when YOU BOTH are ready..not when everyone else thinks you are. You can be engaged for as little or as long as you want..Be happy and live life!

You can be engaged as long as you want to as long as you both STILL want to get married. For some it may take longer because of financial things and such....so there is not really a set "time period" your supposed to get married in. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT.

You have to make sure its right before you jump into marriage. RIGHT?

You can be engaged forever. Take your time...you never hear anyone say "I wish we had hurried up to get married when we were young".

I saw in an obituary recently that a woman who passed away was "...survived by her fiancee of 47 years..." !!!

ALWAYS GOOD TO TAKE YOUR TIME, AND MAKE SURE THAT IT IS THE RIGHT DECISION. LONG ENGAGEMENTS ARE OKAY.
