There's no need to harm them. Spiders are tiny sentient beings and have a right to live as much as you do. Get a clear plastic cup and a thin piece of stiff paper or cardboard. Carefully shoo them into the cup a few at a time, cover with the paper and release them safely and gently outside. It will take you a few minutes but is worth it. If you leave one or two they will hoover up the insects you really don't want in the house.

As a person who loves spiders, I try to collect them and put them outside. I was ashamed and sad for killing one that crawled under my bed last week, I threw a towel over it to grab it, but it was so huge, I panicked and squashed it. I'd just do my best to remove them with a large cloth, and give the area where they've been a good clean, as they leave lots of tiny spider poos everywhere, that seem to glue themselves to surfaces.

Step on them? Hairspray and a lighter?

Or, trap them and let them go outside.

By the way, you might want to leave a few. Spiders eat other gross bugs. It's like free pest control.

I had a load of the little shee-its living inside the flap over my petrol cap. I opened the flap and drove along a dual carriageway at high speed.

Might not be so appropriate if they're in your living room though...

If you place conkers in different places throughout your house it will keep them away.

As for getting rid of them, use the hoover then empty the dustbag outside.
