You buy some descaler from the supermarket and use it according to the instructions on the packet or the bottle. Failing this you can try leaving vinegar in the kettle overnight and bring it to the boil in the morning, then discard it and rinse the kettle thoroughly. Lime scale disolves in acid solutions, so lemon juice would work too. Someone told me that sugarless Coca Cola has the same effect but I have not tried it. Whatever you do, do not use products designed for toilets or handbasins, it would be very dangerous. Good luck!

Cheap malt vinegar works well - I just bought a bottle for 17p from Tesco this week and descaled the kettle about 4 hours ago. Empty the water out, pour the vinegar in, boil and leave it alone; or keep reboiling to descale it quicker. It took about 1.5 hours for a kettle that hasn't been descaled for at least 2 years. If there isn't enough vinegar to fill the kettle deep enough, just prop it up at an angle.

After you have finished rinse it out about five times with water.

There are a lot of products you can get to clean it, and also those metal scourer type things that collect the lime scale but i have found the simplest solution is once your kettle is clean, or you have a new one, get yourself a water filter and only use filtered water in your kettle. i've done that and three years and not a bit of limescale has hit my coffee!

get a de-scaler from the super market to clean whats in the kettle now, or if its that bad then just buy a new kettle as they are not that much.

To prevent it from happening again buy a brita water filter. I used to have that problem as I live in a hard water area. I bought a water filter and I only put filtered water in my kettle and I don't get any limescale at all now.

Supermarket descaler or Steradent tablets work well too. Once its clear, try leaving a couple of small marbles in the bottom of your kettle, it's supposed to help stop the limescale from forming.

Boil with vinegar will clear the limescale. Carry the boiled vinegar to every corner of the room and let the steam evaporate. This boosts your immunity to colds and flus.
