Okay this is going to sound juvenile, but honestly sleeping with a night light or the light on helps immensly. It's rare to have a nightmare when you are not sleeping in the dark. Supposedly there are evil spirits that disturb your sleep, interfere with your dreams or state of sleep. Some believe that sleep paralysis is actually cause by these evil spirits. I don't know if it is actually true or not, but as I stated typically when you sleep with light, the occurance of these things is rare. It's probably really because you feel more secure when you are sleeping rather than some kind of spiritual warfare going on. In my family, when persistant nightmares occur or sleep paralysis, it usually stops with a night light and a crucifix mounted in the room. Whether it's spiritual or a subconcious level of security while your sleeping, I'm not sure. All I know is that it works.

When I was in Puerto Rico three years ago, there a mixture someone (a friend) brought from Hispaniola (Haiti+Dominican Republic) as a beverage. I researched the drink, there's nothing in it that should cause bad dreams or anything of the like.
Everyone who drank from that bottle that night woke up at four in the morning from horrific nightmares with feelings of being paralyzed. No one but me would talk about what they dreamed.
I'll give you the short version of my dream. Little African-like imps chased me down and made me fall. They held me down while one of them crawled up my chest and stared into my eyes. It had no eyes, but it made me see horrific images (I can't remember most of them. One of them was a gnarled piece of wood or base of a tree with blood and maggots dripping on it.
We all had the feeling it was the drink that did it except my friend who brought it. That day he gave it to four other people who know nothing about our dreams. The next day they all claimed to have had the same experience.
What did we do? We smashed the bottle on the rocks at the beach and burned it's contents...
Apparently you haven't had the full Caribbean experience unless you've been voodoo cursed.
The point is, you either have a sleeping disorder, or you have something around your house that is causing a demonic presence. Yes, demons are real and they're quite fond of tormenting people in their dreams. Your best bet is find the offending object or objects and rid yourself of them. Fill your life with wholesome activities and heartfelt prayer to assure the presence doesn't return.
Don't know what object it may be? Here's a clue, generally any kind of an object that may have been associated with someone who was into spiritualistic practices can have a demon attached to it. Demons are especially fond of objects people use in worship because they're able to receive veneration that way. If you have things like that in your home, start looking there.

You might have sleep paralysis. do you ever wake up unable to move, yet you are still dreaming(hallucinating)and in your awake state see demons or ghosts or aliens coming to get you (keep in mind that you are paralyzed)? Does it sometimes seem like you are having an out of body experience in this state, if so? The only treatment is unfortunately, try to be less stressed. Like that's easy. That probably works for normal nightmares too, if you don't suffer from SP.

Change your diet! Avoid caffeine at least 2 hours before you go to bed. Try to relax by taking a long bath or reading a (non-horror) book before you go to bed. Do not sleep with the TV on.

Don't fear your dreams - rule them.
It's a blast when you take control.
