Ok, this is coming from someone who isn't too fond of Top-Forty music- or Top-Forty anything, really. Basically, I think that while someone's listening to pop music is NOT a reason to look down on them or treat them in any way badly, I have a right to express my opinion about the music they listen to, just as they have the right to express their opinion about the music I listen to. The only boundary I set on this is that I try and criticize, not because it's popular, but for more specific reasons- content, musical variation... that sort of thing. And it's not like I think I'm an expert or anything, because as I listen to very little popular music, I don't actually know much about it except for what I hear on the radio. So if they then argue my point, and are able to provide proof that I'm wrong, I think that's great. I'm not ROOTING for pop music to suck, I just don't like where it is right now.
I have noticed what you're saying though, and the reason behind it is because in punk especially- I dunno about goth, emo or alternative, but I'm guessing the "policy" is similar- an artist is expected to create music FOR the music, because they're passionate about the music, or because they want to inspire change through their lyrics (preferably both). It's all about being real and expressing your own views, rather than the views that people want to hear expressed. So when an artist joins up with a big label and becomes popular... they're regarded as selling out (obviously)... Trading their freedom of expression for money to express what people WANT expressed. I KNOW that's not always the case- mentally, at least.
But your right, NO group is better than any other, no matter how they might act. It's all personal preferance. I just happen to prefer the less popular stuff, and I don't mind saying so. My tastes aren't superior, they're just mine.

Why should they feel that any other music is superior? People have different tastes and like certain types of music better than others. For instance, I enjoy listening to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet, both are really old to the youth of today, but I don't think that they are superior. But
Do they have a right to feel that their music is superior, yes, of course, everyone does. Everyone can feel the way they want to. about their music. but I do have the question at the top, which makes me seem contradictory, the question is just there to give my answer interest, that's all.

From the point of view that music is art and that some art is clearly done with more skill, meaning, relevance, insight and beauty than other art, I would say that those who are able to recognize the complete waste that is much of top 40 popular music (although not all of it and much of goth, emo, punk and alt fall into the "total waste" category as well) have some standing to think of their opinions on music as superior to those of people who think that top 40 pop music has some artistic validity.
This being said, most goth, emo, punk and alt folks do not really have artistic reasons for their attachment to their music but are into it because of the crowd they hang with, because they think it's cool or because it appeals to their angst or some other juvenile emotion like - surprise - wanting to feel better or more interesting than others.
The short answer is no. But everyone knows that punk is the only really creative (or creatively destructive?) music form anymore and that if you're not punk your not s#*t. (Just kidding.)

Put it this way. I'm a complete metal head, but I do listen to everything. And I'm not just saying "everything" like most people do, which means if they like metal they maybe like one rap artist or something, but will never admit in a million years that they like the new Justin Timberlake song (I'm bringin' sexy back, lol). NO, I mean I love metal (look at my 360 page, http://360.yahoo.com/chargerfan311), but I also listen to Black Eyed Peas (yes, I own the Fergie album), BTNH, DMX, Afroman, Lil' Jon, Chamillionaire, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Mariah, Michael Jackson, Shakira, Natasha Bedingfield, Kelly Clarkson, American Idol stuff (watch the show religiously), Tori Amos, Sara Evans, Dixie Chicks, Alan Jackson, Rascal Flatts, Trace Atkins, Pure Moods albums, Enya, Clannad, ATB, Darude, DJ Irene, Toy Box (ha ha, remember them), 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's, love The Beatles, Neil Diamond, Elton John, and Sam Cooke. Anyway, I could go on forever, cause I own 500+ CD's (about 60% of that being hard rock/metal, that's not counting albums that I have copied from other people or the internet). Let me know if you need more.
Anyway, my point is... I can't stand the people that listen to one genre of music (and throw themselves into it with the clothes, hair, and the way of life), and act like they hate all other kinds of music. It's very simple. If you like music, you like music. You're not picky about what you listen to. You listen to what sounds goods to you regardless of the genre or type.
So the answer to the question is NO... I can say that it pisses me off, though, when people listen to Top-40 music, and have never heard of anything beside what they hear on the radio and TRL (There's this guy that I know that still listens to TLC - "Waterfalls" like it's brand new). So, in closing, all I want to say is for people that listen to just Top-40, expand from normal, and people that are "stuck" in their genres, you also expand from normal, and admit once in a while that you like a pop song, country song, or metal song.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Their is no right or wrong in music. Some people can love country while others would rather rock on.
I personally love punk, emo, ska and reggae the most but I do make room for other genres so that I can make my own opinion. If others think that I suck, that's just too bad for them. It won't stop me from enjoying and listening to the music I truly love.

no one is right anymore, everyone is messed up somehow, but when a person has a palette for a certain kind of music, they tend to roll their eyes at everything else, i'm guily of it for sure. but people have a thing for needing to feel supirior somehow, and musical taste is just one of the many choices. but i honestly just can't stand hearing the same songs over and over again, they are all played in malls on the radio, neighbors, friends who listen to it, even frickin' ringtones now, it's very annoying to me personally, i love the fact that i can listen to bands that i'm not forced to hear all the time, you know what i mean?

I can understand how anyone that listens to things other than what is considered mainstream can put themselves on a pedistal, but what they fail to realize is that they are on the pedistal with millions of other people. Just because its not mainstream doesn't mean its not popular. And having worked at major record labels, please trust that the same label putting out Paris Hilton's album is the same label putting out HIM and The Flaming Lips. It's all the same machine, so don't get cocky and enjoy your music!

People take what music "speaks to them" very personally, and it is human to want to use something like that to feel superior. Like religion, people are as touchy about music as they are about religion, because these things "move them" Like I alway say: Whatever moves your internal vibrations, man." I like your hat. I'm a type a negative too.
