This is my uneducated opinion: Most hate us because we are different and some actually believe that we belong elsewhere. We are Ethnic, rich in color, and sometimes how we do things are a bit unique. So the prejudice comes in different packages.

People dont decide to be prejudice, its something youve been taught. A newborn baby is like a blank slate, ppl who are prejudice are taught that way by ignorant influeneces. Most ppl go along with but some ppl like Ratz4ever above me have a mind of their own, dont let other ppl skew reality.
Also, some african americans dont represent us ( im part black) in a positive light. And if you are not around different types of black people and all you see is what is being portrayed on MTV and BET, then those behaviors in a sense confirm your prejudiced beliefs.
Another reason ppl "chose" to be prejudice is becasue rejecting is easier than being accepting. If a grown adult still chooses to be prejudice evn after they should know that not all ppl are the same and you cant classify a race based on what group of ignorant ppl do...then the prejudiced person is ignorant or an intolerant person.

It's usually NOT a decision. It is something learned, such as from parents, or from the community.
If a person hangs out with a prejudiced crowd, they will tend to have the same attitudes.
On rare occasions, prejudice can develop from a single bad experience, especially if the event is traumatic enough. It didn't take long for most of the United States to develop prejudicial attitudes and stereotypes of certain kinds of people after Pearl Harbor, or after September 11, 2001.

Out of ignorance. A lack of true morals and values works as a an added reason as well. Unfortunately, society plays a strong role in our lives as individuals. And, society in past all the way through to the present has often times lost sight of what's really important. We have to be a part of a new generation that breaks free from the vicious circle of prejudices. What I mean by this is, it all has to start somewhere. If we learn to become more open minded and accepting of people taking them for WHO they are and not WHAT they are, then we will begin to open our eyes toward fairness and equality. Sure, terrible events occurred in the past involving slavery, etc... but instead of dwelling on these negative issues, and continuing down the road of destruction, we need to begin to leave our pasts there...in the past!

I don't know that people always decide this. I am not prejudice but my father is to a very small extent I believe. My grandfather moreso than him. So I believe it is learned in a way but we have the ability to choose for ourselves.
I feel it is the same with all races, and yes, even white people. Other races may believe we are only out for ourselves and don't like people from other races to exceed in anything - as we like to be in the majority. Yes, some white people may be like that, but not all. But if you believe all white people are that way, then you are prejudice as well.
It is a vicious cycle that hopefully, over time, will stop. All we can do is live to the best of our ability, help others, care for others, and show that no matter what color our skin, we are all the same. We all have basically the same needs, wants, and desires from life.

People are prejudice against all races. The main reason for hate is fear. People choose to be prejudice because it is a lot harder to get to know someone then to just not like them. And for most people ignorance is bliss. I personally have fallen victim to this. Most fear what they don't understand and African Americans don't try to improve the image that they are "gifted" with because somewhere along the way it was considered OK. Being considered a thug in one place may be OK but a lot of places don't tolerate it. The way we look wasn't because someone thought it was cool to sag their pants but it is an adaptation in order to get make it. Having to wear an older siblings clothes because you can only afford one pair of jeans is reality for a lot of people. Being the MTV generation a lot of people are exposed to one type of African American. Music videos and television pass the majority of us off as the thugs, the pimps and drug-dealers like we pioneered it and we are stupid enough to be OK with it. So, why are people prejudice against African American, because we make it so easy.

It could be because they are raised in an environment in which someone in their lives is prejudiced, and they grow up thinking it is normal. They could also have been the victim of some kind of traumatizing act, and as a result they distrust everyone of that particular group.
in reality, there is no reason for prejudice, but perception and ignorance tend to play a large part in who we are. I guess that I'm saying people don't really choose to be prejudiced, but because of internal and external forces in their lives they end up being so.
It's a case of nature vs nurture; are people inherently predjudice, or it is a learned behavior? Sadly, I don't think there is an actual "correct" answer for a question like this.

I don't think people are so much predudice, as they are disgusted about their whinning all the time about how mistreated they are and that they are being denied the same rights as their fellow Americans. They have the same opportunities as anyone else, but like anyone else, you have to work hard to change your life, you have to make right choices, you have to have hope and faith combined with determination.
I feel black Americans have many talents and abilities that need
to be pursued that all America is missing out on.
It's time for the Black Americans to start teaching their children to hope and dream and to set goals to improve their lives.
Each and every person was put on this earth for a purpose but, it's up to us to find out what that purpose is.
I may get in trouble for saying this but, I would encourage all Americans to go and see a movie that is coming out today, Friday October 13th in theaters all across America called "One Night With The King" it is about hope, destiny, and purpose. It is a story about an orphaned teenage Jewish girl who later became the Queen of Persia, which is now called Iran. She is better know as Esther and you can read her story in the Bible.

Most aren't.
I know it is politically incorrect, but it has been my experience that the African American community tends to perpetuate the specter of racism. I suspect the reasons are somewhat complex. I believe a part of it is because being a member of a "protected" class of people carries benefits that would not not present if everyone was truly color blind.
Personally, I subscribe to the vision of Dr. King and long for a day when all men are judged by the depth of their character and not the color of their skin.

I do not believe it an actual decision. It more of a taught prejudice. Where I live many play together and are great friends. Because their parents did not teach hate, but, respect. AND this is a two way street.

Its not just african-americans. Bigots are usually against anyone who is the slightest bit different than themselves. It usually comes from being raised by hate filled people. Its a terrible blight and an ugly standpoint.
