There are many good answers up here.
I use to own a Mercedes 300E. I loved that car and I loved the brakes. It was a 1991 which I sold in 2003. The last 6 months I had it the repairs were killing me...
I traded it in for a Jaguar S-Type. Beautiful car - but no German brakes on it...
Just a few months ago - I took a BMW 300i out for a test drive. I was hooked. Great brakes, great response time - fantastic handling. Not as "touring" or "smooth" like a Mercedes - but great for the long haul. I traded in the Jag and picked up the 330. I love it...it has gotten me to enjoy driving again.
Funny - the faster I go, the better gas mileage I get. And I don't have any maintenance (brake pads, rotors, oil changes) to worry about until January of 2009.
Take their advice - test drive both (maybe the dealerships will let you have the car for a weekend to help make up your mind) and then decide what is right for you and your needs.

A BMW is sportier and a Benz shows status...
But I suggest a Prius. Save the environment! Not face, around your friends!
At least you didn't ask about a Hummer or an SUV. You actually have some common sense I guess, so I wont completely rag on you.

BMW!!! Mercedes is nice but it can't TOUCH BMW. BMW is definitely the ultimate driving machine. Do your research first. Check out all the safety features BMW has. Check out the warranty BMW has. BMW is an awesome car. Mercedes is good but not GREAT and the maintenence plan is ridiculously expensive. Do a comparison. Mercedes is all about luxury. BMW is about luxury and performance.

The best one for what? Do you want a car that takes you from home to work to the grocery store? Do you want a car that is comfortable for long trips? A sports car with power & ability to hug the road? A car that's good in snow?
What are you looking for? Do you even know? Is price a factor? Gas mileage? Maintenance & upkeep costs? Financing?

Don't waste your money on the Benz or the Bmw. Buy a Vette or a Viper.
