Iris by the GooGoo Dolls
Origins and theme
The instrumentals in the song are heavily driven by guitar riffs and violins, with a steady drum beat beneath. The lyrics tell the story of an unknown person's desire to be known by the object of his love. However, he seeks to avoid the notice of others because of possible repercussions. The theme of these lyrics ties in directly to the film, in which an angel falls in love with a mortal woman, and can only stay with her by giving up his angelic nature and becoming mortal.

It was the first song that the Goo Goo Dolls had been asked to write specifically for a film. Songwriter Johnny Rzeznik has been quoted as saying he broke several years of writer's block and several years of sobriety simultaneously the night he wrote this track.

Lead singer Johnny Rzeznik wrote this. He had a terrible case of writer's block before coming up with this. He even went to a psychiatrist for help.

This is about a person who no one understands. Then, he finds true love. He wants his true love to know that he exists and that she is the only person in the world who can understand and love him - hence the last line, "I just want you to know who I am." The title means this is how I see you and me and everyone.

If you want a play by play of what the song means you should watch city of angels - The song was written for the movie.

Well, Split Enz did a song called Iris around 1980-1982, and it was about love from a -far. But I know that's not what you mean.

Well it was written for The City of Angels movie... so maybe it is that he is an angel and in the movie the only way that he knows that he is a mortal again is that he bleeds.

Death. It seems to reference how death changes our perception of life and how we should acknowledge it.
