Love it.

You have to remember that every time you listen to or play the blues, you are reaching deep down into the roots of a huge amount of today's music - from rock, to rock and roll, to hard rock, to jazz. That's what a scratchy recording of Robert Johnson really is - it's a blueprint (bluesprint?) for so much to follow, all the way from Clapton and Hendrix to Miles Davis.

The first thing people say about the blues is that it's depressing. Is this really true? Maybe the blues is life-affirming. Maybe you can call them songs of courage, or songs of fortitude, when you remember their origins. And not all blues songs are depressing! Many songs by B B King, or - one of my favourites - 'Corinna' by Taj Mahal, Delbert McClinton and many others - can put a smile on your face.

The most beautiful sound in the world is stringing an acoustic with clean new strings and playing some blues, bending that steel and letting it sing the way it's sung for well over a hundred years.

Some of the things I like are:

The personal touch. Lucky me, I live in Chicago, where the small venues often give you a chance get up close to the players, Hearing the music and watching the technique is quite enjoyable. Also meeting with the musicians is terrific. I'd rather buy music from them too. They are always happy to sign a cd and chat a while.
I like the honesty in blues music. Vocals come from the heart and wide range of emotions by the lead musicians. A few months ago I saw Watermelon Slim playing at Buddy Guy's club. First time playing in Chicago in 32 years. It was really hard to say who enjoyed the gig more, Slim or us. Best time I've had this year
Also a minor point. Going to the clubs is easy on the wallet. Spend $100 on some overrated or past prime "super bands"? Not me. Give me more of the big city blues.

I love the blues. When I first discovered that a lot of rock music had its roots in the blues, I started listening and collecting blues albums and was completely taken in by the pureness of the music. If any form of music could be classified as emotional it would have to be the blues. They are real songs of life. Love, hate, sadness, happiness, hardship, it's all there. I took up the harp and in those times when life is kickin' you around, just start playin' the blues and it always, somehow ,makes you feel a little better. It's good for what ails ya!

I most enjoy "electric blues" (classified as such by iTunes, anyway - such as T-Bone Walker, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Derek Trucks, among others). I love the emotion that comes through clearly, I love the . . . well, I can't think of a better word to describe what I call the "funkiness" of some of it, and the guitar work.

I also like that the early blues was the wellspring of so much of contemporary music.

The music is steeped in history and culture so that interests me. Plus the sounds are just very smooth and relaxing.
