Guinea pigs make excellent pets, for ages four and up, with supervision of course, unlike hamster and gerbils they are less likely to bite and do not smell if you are changing their cage on a regular basic, Do not you cedar shaving, as they are dangerous to the piggies. I run a rescue and we have placed 1,950 piggies in loving forever homes. Keep in mind when getting a piggy (please adopt) for your child keep in mind that you will be the primary care giver. We get a lot of owner turn ins. The main reason is child lost interest in caring for it. They are easy to care for you need an plastic bottom cage wire on top, bedding, woody pet, care fresh, yesterdays news, or aspen are all fine, a commercial grain for guinea pigs, as the need victim C fresh fruits and veggies, water and hay, alfalfa under six months timothy over 6 month. Oh yes and lots of love,

If you go with a rescue you will leave know how to take care of them, they will also be guaranteed to be healthy and not pregnant which is not always the case with larger pet store, I will not name names as that would be rude and mean all at the same time.

Okay I would like to clear up a few things; guinea pigs rarely bite, and do not eat each other’s head when they die, as for the day care did they feed them?

before I answer you're question, I will point out the fact that it is never a good idea to get more that one type of pet in such a short space of time, but as long as you know how to look after them and make suure you do it properly then it's fine. smoking is bad for anyone's health no matter weather it's a human or an animal. Even though you're mom dosen't smoke in you're bedroom and bathroom, the smoke will still go in there because it will be in the entire house when you open and close doors so it makes no difference where in the house you're pet is. it will still be incontact with some degree of smoke. just think if a human's lungs fill up with all that tar over say 40 years, imagine hoow tiny a hamster's or guinea pigs lungs are compared to a humans. how quickly will they fill up. just think about that. if you get these pets they will probably only live about a third of their lifespans if that. I really don't mean to be rude or nasty and you sound like a sensible enough person to be thinking about this and not wanting to harm them. not many people consider their pets' health and just assume they will be fine, but just because the animal can't say it's suffering dosen't mean it's not. Hope this helps.

To me they a little on the abundant Oder like the Hamsters you are familiar with. They make good pets though and children enjoy the sound they make and may try to imitate the guinea pig. Which, I feel helps develop some imagination and use of vocal chords. Heck, I think Hank Williams Jr. probably had a guinea pig when he was a child, look what it did for him!!!
You may need to monitor the children at first, but, even the 4 year old can learn to properly handle the guinea pig without hurting it.

I have a guniea pig at the moment. His name is michael. Sometimes guniea pigs are very delicate as long as they have plenty of water they should be fine. i suggest a short hair guniea pig tr and get one around a year old. The guniea pigs i have had lasted around 8 years each but most will only last around 6. I got my first guniea pig when i was 10 my sister was8 and my litttle bro was 4 the guniea pig was a great hit. Everyone loved him! I feel that guniea pigs are a great pet for kids just be careful that the four year old does not try and throw him.

Rodents are not good pets for small children. They do bite, and they do not like to be held all of the time. Even if the guienea pigs are older, they get cranky sometimes and want to be alone. If your child does get bit, and drops the pig, they can break legs or suffer nerve damage. Stick with a kitten or a puppy :)

Guiena pigs are great pets, but it takes several months for them to trust you. You need to handle them daily and continue to do so always. My boys loved to do this at first, but got frustraited that the piggies didn't get comfortable with them quick enough. If you have time to spend with them every day they are very sweet and fairly easy to take care of.

My brother and I have had guinea pigs since he was 3. I have never had them bite (like hamsters) or any other problems. We had ours in a plastic container and put shavings in it. She loved it because it was 5 times larger than a cage, and it was easy cleaning. Do not use the lid... they will not get out. Very easy maintenance and they live long, too.

Our local daycare just had a problem with some guinea pigs that might make you not want to get any.
You see, they had a pair of guinea pigs. One of them died and the other one decided to eat the head of the one that had died. Fortunately, none of the children had to witness this. I'm sure you wouldn't want your children to see anything like that either.

Four is too young. Guinea pigs like to be held, but not handled a lot. Four year olds can be a little rough with pets. If you upset a guinea, they will bite, too.
