Yes, it is common in the Middle East. Everyone there knows it and accepts it but they just try not to publicize it. Honor Killing is accepted against women and sometimes even men. China is into this also. The head of the family, the matriach, can make the decision to save the honor of the family. It is disgraceful for women to sleep around, not wear appropriate clothing (covered), or just not to be accounted for (around where they know where she is at all the time). A womans place is in the home to care for the kids and the man and that is it.
They have no problem killing the one who disgraces the family as they believe the soul sits with God or Allah or Budda. They know they will come to live again.
I must say many of these countries are slowly changing but it is hard as it has been in their cultures for thousands of years. The USA has groups devoted to informing them as to why it is barbaric and sometimes we even try to rescue the woman and have done so before.
Aren't us women so happy to live in the good old USA?

You know the worst part to all this? It's that this kind of stuff happens here too. We just don't hear about it as much because they keep it quiet. The last one which made it on the news was in Holland. Some family chased down their daughter and new husband and shot them in a train station.

It's hard to imagine that this stuff goes on sometimes when all you hear from school and the media is about how equal men and women have become. It's not true and that's very sad. I went through school thinking that I really could be whatever I set out to be. It was very disillusioning to work really hard and become a professional and then get into the work place and get treated like everyone's secretary because I'm young and female. We have a long way to go here, let alone over on the other side of the world where women have no voices and are not even human. The best we can do is work hard ourselves and be an example. Hopefully we are changing the world by just succeeding in our own life challenges. I really wish I could tell you that it's better here. I really do.

Yes, I have but don't remember if it is Brazil, you know they are more than 1 country that believes in this, It is Brazil, one of them, because if a man there, kills a woman for having sex outside their marriage they don't go to jail. Also I think India does it too.

Yes. I find it grotesque. And it is because of sheer ignorance, which produces a lack of respect for the opposite sex. How horrible!

Yes its sadly true. Some places in Africa, to prevent them from having sex or getting pregnant they sew the women's genitalia when they start their period until they get married. How terrible.
