It's purely a case of each to his own.
If spending £40k on his car floats his boat then why not? He's enjoyed the project and he's obviously proud of the result and takes any chance to bring everyone's attention to it.
For others it might be art, boats, plastic surgery............anything!! As long as they're not hurting anyone and they've got that sort of cash spare let 'em get on with it.
I personally wouldn't spend £40k on building a 'kit' car either but i would happily blow it on a 'proper' car - and more given the opportunity.

It's all about what you value. Some people would like to spend their money of fancy clothes, some on a nice house...others would rather live in a one bedroom apartment, wear cheap clothes and drive an awesome car. None of them are right or wrong, just personal preference.
A lot of people will take a middle of the road car like a honda civic and turn it into something extraordinary instead of just buying a high end car to begin with for a number of reasons.
1) it makes it personal, you have a one of a kind machine that no one else has
2) you can build it to focus on whats important to you. You can focus on adding power, adding style, handling, etc. You're in control and don't have to compromise by taking what the factory decides is best.
3) you don't have to spend all the money at once. You can buy the car and add to it and customize it over time as you can afford it instead of paying everything up front.
Some people just see a car as a tool to get them from point A to point B - to them it doesn't make sense to spend a lot. To others it is a tool as well as a hobby or even a lifestyle. At least they are passionate about something.

Boy's n their toy's hunnie!!! But to be honest if it was a real man he'd just go out and buy a decent car. My house mate spends every waking moment doing up this jeep he has to take it off roading. Admittedly, it's the enjoyment he gets from going off roading, but it's forever needing new parts or to stop him getting bored he'll stand outside finding new parts to put on it just to keep him occupied!!! Personally I think he's a little obsessed and some days he spends so long playin with it he gets angry and throws a tantrum!!!! I can't justify spending 40 grand, but some people want it all, ie, every mod con possibly going all in one car!!
I think it's a bit of both, they enjoy doing up their cars but love showing off!

It falls under the "to each his own" category.
Personally, I'm in agreement with you, spending thousands to fix up a car like that is rather foolish. I still drive my first car, a 2001 Cavalier, which is nothing fancy, but it suits my needs. The only exterior/interior additions I've made are a few surfing, NASCAR, and work-related bumper stickers.
I have a family to support, we live in a house that we own, and I work for a living. I'm with you - if I ever did have $40K, I'd spend it elsewhere.

If he is earning good money, and probable lives with his ma and pa, pays no bills, its up to him how he spends. I think the 40,000 is a porky pie, everything would have to be made of gold.

It sounds like the "mate" has an abundance of money and, in fact, more money than he has sense. Everyone to his/her own. Pops

They do it mainly for the love of it, let's face it you'd have to be pretty fanatical to spend that much.
