It is estimated that one and a half million Armenians perished between 1915 and 1923. There were an estimated two million Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire on the eve of W.W.I. Well over a million were deported in 1915. Hundreds of thousands were butchered outright. Many others died of starvation, exhaustion, and epidemics which ravaged the concentration camps. Among the Armenians living along the periphery of the Ottoman Empire many at first escaped the fate of their countrymen in the central provinces of Turkey. Tens of thousands in the east fled to the Russian border to lead a precarious existence as refugees. The majority of the Armenians in Constantinople, the capital city, were spared deportation. In 1918, however, the Young Turk regime took the war into the Caucasus, where approximately 1,800,000 Armenians lived under Russian dominion. Ottoman forces advancing through East Armenia and Azerbaijan here too engaged in systematic massacres.

Turkey will never recognize the Armenian Genocide nor will ever allow Kurds to establish their country....Unfortunately, they still dream of the Ottoman Empire; I saw Turkish people in the news today saying that they were never taught anything about any Armenian Genocide. They believe that in 1915, their own rights were offended by the Armenians.....The vast majority of the Turkish people are ultra-nationalists; every country has nationalists but in Turkey this percentage is extremely high. For example, when you ask them how they feel about Cyprus, their response is: "Cyprus is like a child to us; no one can separate a child from its mother" (mother in this case is of course Turkey).....The real political power which governs Turkey today is the military one and what the military forces want is to have people's support; the only way to manage this is by forming a strong national identity. And this has to be done through the educational system, which is the most powerful ideological mechanism a state has.....So, they distort historical events. Completely.....

They'll admit it when they become mature and self-confident as a society, enough to admit mistakes. A childish society cannot do this.
