Whilst working abroad, I found that many Canadians were really offended if you assumed that they were American. But there doesnt seem to be an easy way to be able to differentiate the accent. Any tips?

It's in the O's. You'll notice it in words like house and about.

I can't describe how it sounds, but I've never heard an American pronounce OU in that exact same way.

no longer instantly away yet after speaking a touch to a Canadian i visit %. it up. some words are suggested very in a unique way yet for the most section i detect that Canadian accents west of Quebec and Midwestern US accents sound very nearly same, except that i have said that some Canadians have a good extra nasal sound, pretty Neil youthful. Being from the northeastern US neither are accents i'm continually uncovered to. i assume if i replaced into from Canada or the midwest i might want to be ready to carry close the version instantly away.

I'm American but I live in London and everyone thinks I'm Canadian. I think it's because I've lived here so long my accent has really softened- people say that's why, because Canadian accents are just a bit softer and less exaggerated and OTT.

First of all, there is not an "American" accent but many of them....a Texan accent is very different from a New York or a Boston one. And the Canadian is different from all of them. There is no way of explaining the difference by mail. You have to hear them to catch the difference. Having said that...Canadian accent is more similar to "American" than to British, and to a British ear they can sound quite similar.
