Is it possible to have too much REM sleep, and if so how can the amount of REM sleep be suppressed? This is because often I wake after extremely vivid dreams feeling more tired than when I went to sleep!

I dont think you can control your dreaming. Some nights I dont dream whereas as others its one after the other. I think it depends what is on your mind maybe during the day and how relaxed you are when you go to bed.
