He didn't name him the black horse, he called him the dark horse. It is basically the same term as a sleeper. No one thought he would be any good, and he surprised everyone with his talent.

Dave Navarro actually named Ryan Star the dark horse, not the black horse. I believe the term dark horse is used as euphemism to describe a person who is an underdog. A person, who no one thought would succeed. Ryan Star entered the competition as an underdog, but surprised everyone by being a formidable contender, who in the minds of many, including myself, demonstrated himself to be a far superior musician in relation to other contestants. It’s a travesty that he was booted off the show before less than stellar musicians like Storm, Magni, or Lukas.

I have just purchased his CD “Songs From the Eye of an Elephant” and it is a superb work of art.
