He's certainly one of my favorite of all time. But there is no single "greatest drummer of all time" in my opinion. There are many who are the greatest in their genre(s) at a particular time. What defines a great drummer? Is it dextarity, endurance, complexity, or the way they define a group's sound?

Neil Peart certainly qualifies in those areas. Rush probably wouldn't have achived the success they have were he not their drummer. Yet there are other drummers who are equally amazing in talent.

As a drummer, I can play Rush note for note. But I can't make the same claim for some of the material from Bill Bruford, Dennis Chambers, and Alan White, among others (I wish I had Chambers technique!).

Other genres have their own greatest drummers.

Ringo Starr wasn't a great technician, but he defined the Beatles sound and inspired a lot of new drummers. You can listen to the drum track alone and know what song it is.

Buddy Rich was the best drummer of all time. That's my opinion. When it came to technique, speed, power, and the ability to put together incredible drum solos, Buddy Rich lived up to the billing of "the world's greatest drummer." Although some other drummers were more innovative, in reality none were in his league even during the early days. A genius, Buddy Rich started playing drums in vaudeville as "Traps, the Drum Wonder" when he was only 18 months old; he was completely self-taught. Rich performed in vaudeville throughout his childhood and developed into a decent singer and a fine tap dancer. But drumming was his purpose in life, and by 1938 he had discovered jazz and was playing with Joe Marsala's combo. Gene Krupa would be my second pick as greatest drummer of all time.
