Contractions last about a 60-90 seconds. You can have true labor with contractions that only last 50 seconds. Length of the contraction has nothing to do with real vs false labor.

I didnt know the difference between all the fake ones I had my last month and the real labor pains until afterwards. Then it became all too clear the fake vs real ones - the fake ones I said 'oh hey, my tummy is getting all tight and feels funny'. The real ones I said 'holy cow, that hurts!'.(inwardly of course as I was bent over in pain) Dont know if others think the same thing after experiencing real contractions or not. I had very regular Braxton Hicks contractions, evenly spaced that would go on for hours.

P.S. Someone says if you think you are in labor go to the hospital... I would say no, dont go until you KNOW you are in labor. Otherwise that will make the time you are in the hospital even longer than it already will be. Try walking around, and according to my mid-wife if you take a nice relaxing bath and STILL have contractions afterwards they are likely the real thing. On avg the first delivery takes 10 hrs, and nothing really exciting happens until the very end. That is, if you are having a healthy pregnancy and feeling fit....

Depends, do they hurt? I mean, really hurt! If they're braxton hicks they'll wear off after a while and won't particularly hurt, you'll just feel a stretching and tightening of the uterus. Any other signs, I take it your waters haven't gone? Ride em out and start timing them, time the length of the contraction AND time the space in between each one. If you're not sure, phone the hospital!

A contraction will last about 2 to 4 minutes if it is the real thing. i fit is not it will last about 2 minutes and will be 15 to 30 minutes apart. other wise it will be 2 to 5 minutes apart. love mammas0212

call your doctor

They get paid to tell you stuff like that and they're usually smarter than Yahoo Answers.
