Leytonstone - try and find a place to live on the 'Upper' side of Leytonstone (Kings Road/ Queens road etc) which is close to Epping Forest and has a villiage feel to it. It takes about 15/20 mins on the Central Line (the best and most reliable tube line in my opinion) to get to Liverpool Street. Leytonstone is also close to the A12 and M11 and A406 if you want to get out of London quickly on the weekend. and close (but not too close) to Stratford for the overland train and the Olympics - in 2012!! Alfred Hitchcock and David Beckham also hail from Leytonstone!

Why not come and live in Sunny Suffolk and commute? The train from Ipswich to Liverpool Street takes just over an hour.

Try Whitechapel or Algate (cheap accomopdation+food) they are in Zone2 but 2 mins away fron Zone 1. Avoid Hackney (not safe for night travels)

Depends on your budget, but I'd recommend Bethnal Green or Mile End. Very good transport connections through tube and buses and good services.
