I didn't see it myself, was a small kid then, but actually saw it on a program, a few years ago, about great South African sporting moments.
It looked good, and I got that fibe from it, that it must have been the talk of the day back then.

Who could forget?!!
I was going to post the exact same question.
I saw that live on TV at 6 in the morning. It was huge. Coetzee was a 7 to 1 underdog and he'd already failed twice to win the title - once from John Tate, and once from Mike Weaver.

Dokes was undefeated, and when Coetzee stopped him in the 10th to win the WBA title, it became Ring Magazine's Upset Of The Year for 1983.
He also became the first white man since Ingemar Johannson (23 years) to hold a portion of the world title - Larry Holmes was the WBC champ.

And what a fight it was - total war, with Gerrie controlling the fight with a tight, disciplined fight plan.

Great question!
