I'm doing a project in my US History class, and it's writing a paper proposing what you are for and against. I've narrowed it down to Drugs or Curfew. What should I do?

I'd do the curfew project, because it hasn't been done a million times before and it lets you explore the whole nature of civil liberties. Many cities (like Washington DC) are turning to the idea of youth curfews as a way of reducing crime. It should be possible to gather statistics to see if this has really been effective. Is it really enforceable? Has crime gone down? Has it hurt kids who have jobs? I see this as a stronger project because curfews cut into the freedoms of a group of people who have done no harm to themselves or others: kids who have not committed crimes and who have no intention of committing crimes who are treated as potential criminals just because of their age. Also, the state is usurping the role of the parents of these kids, who should be the ones setting the guidelines. Remember to look at all sides of the picture, not just the viewpoint of the teenagers.

Good luck with your project!

Legalizing drugs, and here is why. The number one and number two most addictive drugs in the USA are legal - nicotine ( which is a narcotic ) and alcohol. Yet marijuana, which has no addictive properties, remains illegal. The reason the goverment doesn't want to legalize it is because they classify it as a 'gateway' drug leading to drug abuse. But they don't tell you that alcohol and nicotine have almost always been used FIRST ( and regularly ) by 'drug addicts' before they started using marijuana. The reason they don't make nicotine illegal is because the USA subsidizes tobacco growers. They sell cigarettes for a huge profit oversees, and then the government collects the subsidy back in the form of income and business taxes - which means they are investing in nicotine to make a profit. Also since something like 10% of all US adults smoke, they don't want the FDA to classify nicotine as a 'narcotic' because that would mean 10% of all adults in the USA are addicted to a 'drug'. I could go on for days about this, but if you do your research properly, you should have a great paper that you can use again in college, or even just to impress the girls and your parents.

You'll be able to find more information on drugs than curfew. But the topic of legalizing drugs has been done so many times that I think it's getting boring. I think the curfew topic would be more interesting, but probably a little harder to find information on.

I'd choose the topic about curfew and do some research on how unsucessful it has been in history around the world at actually curbing violence. A lot of people have been killed in the name of keeping the curfew. Drugs is passe'

You should look at the NORML web site and decide whether to choose legalization of drugs or curfew. I believe the resources found online will be better on the subject of marijuana legalization than curfew issues but you decide after looking at the site below.
There are a lot of links that will help you research both sides of the issue too.

well drugs has a big history especially if you go back to the beginning of the 20th century. heroine used to be in nerve tonics. so if you want a lot of info go that way. curfews dont have as big of a history so it will be more of a what i think about it type paper

Well if you're going to write about drugs you should atleast write it from the perspective that the war on drugs is not a war that can be won ever unless:
1. every person who uses drugs (ever recreationally) is locked
2. every person who sells drugs is locked up

Until:
3. ALL drugs are eliminated

this is the ONLY way to win the war on drugs... and its not plausible...
so thats probably a more academic way to go about the legalization issues....
you might want to start with if alcohol then why not pot, if pot then why not opium, if opium why not herion if herion why not crack, if crack why not coke... what is the fundamental difference here- and why is our government legislating morality.

good luck!
