If you do go down the degree route this can be beneficial for many reasons you will meet contacts, you might find a route in that you had not thought of, you might even change what you want to do and become a director or editor.
It is worth looking out for the BBC talent things as well have a look at the link below. Channel 4 also do stuff like comedy lab which is a good way to start. I suggest that you try and get a good group of actors together and film your shorts/flim/sit com or whatever it is you are doing. Then submit it to the BBC or research and find which other TV companies specialise in Comedy and send it to every single one that you find.
If this does not work then try and find a good agent they really do help and will help companies take you more seariously, I could not do without mine. In fact try and find an agent anyway.

ABC has a partnership with the Walt Disney company; they have an internship that's open to anyone. They require a written sample for motion pictures OR current TV shows. If your materials are good enough you may get selected and become a career writer! In any event it's worth the practice. Check it out! Good Luck!

It's practically, impossible, professional writers have a hard time getting a job in the field.
There are many workshops in NYC that teach comedy writing, as well, as how to get a job in the field.

Write a dummy script for an episode of an existing comedy show. Know your characters intimately. Make it funny. Make it hilarious. Know how tv scripts work - timing for advertisements, teasers, epilogues etc. Send it to the producers. You've got nothing to lose. Go for it!
