Being addicted isn't a good reason, it's a pathetic excuse. It's like trying cocaine and becoming addicted. Its knowing the risk and being smart enough to avoid it, jackasses!!!

You know, people like to be in control. They like to say they make the decisions in their life, and smoking is just some people's way of rebelling. It's unfortunate, and I wish there was something I could do about it, but there isn't. It's their choice to kill themselves, and they seem to relish that choice. (I don't really know if I used that correctly. I'm thinking not...oh well) I really think that all we can do is tell them once what we think about it, and make sure we don't let them smoke near us, and hopefully that will make a difference. If it doesn't, sadly there's nothing we can really do about it.

People still smoke because they are addicted. People will only quit when they want to and because they want to. If you have never been a smoker, you cannot understand what it is like. I am a former smoker and I am a tobacco grower. I think it is great that people are not smoking and encouraging others to not start. What people did not think about was what is going to happen to the farmer. You can't imagine how many farmers depended on this income to make car/truck payments, tractor payments, mortgage payments, and just to have money to live on. Not that many years ago, that's all the income farmers had was their crops, they didn't work outside jobs. You hear all this about the tobacco buyout. Believe me, it's not nearly the money we made when we grew the tobacco. It's hard going from $14,000 per year to $2500 per year. We only get a small percent of what we earned. What do we raise now? Fruits, vegetables etc. It's harder work that we have to do EVERY night. It's going to markets 3-4 times per week just so you can sell your veggies and they don't rot in the field. All of this ON TOP OF working public jobs.

Like I said, I'm all for people stopping smoking but it seems the farmers were bashed when all we were doing was supporting our families. I agree smoking kills, so does second hand smoke, so does dip, chewing tobacco, snuff etc and everyone should make every effort to quit and find all the support they can so they don't have the urge to start again. When you see all this beautiful farmland going up for sale that has been made into lots or into a subdivision, stop and think that this was the only option they probably had. It was probably lose everything they had or sell. How hard would the decision be for any of you if you had to sell a farm that had been in your family for several generations? I'm not ranting, I just want to inform everyone what is really going on.

I am a smoker of 10 years now. I smoke because I enjoy it. I realize it is not healthy, and I dont do it to be cool. I could give a rats *** what you think:) But then I see people who are 80 and 90 years old still smoking. I just hope I'm lucky I guess.

actually most of us who smoke, wish it was easier to quit because of all the guff we constantly get about it.. not to mention the fact is bad for us !! BUT unfortunately we are not smoking because we think it's "cool", we are addicted to nicotine, and it is VERY difficult to quit. I have tried many times and failed. One of my friends quit for 12 years, had some rough times, and started again. It is a "drug" in all senses of the word, but unfortunately for most of us, when they figured out how bad it was, we were already hooked.. go figure !!!

It's an addiction and hard to quit. It's even harder to quit if you actually enjoy smoking.
