sure you can host your own as long as your ISP and your hardware can handle the traffic it will generate. but you need to register its name, so that when someone types in "abc123webpage.com" their ISP can look it up in the registry and know where to send them. domain registry can be as cheap as $5 US / year.

If you plan on getting any traffic DSL may be a problem. If it's an information-only type of site, some pictures and such you should be ok.
You'll need to actually register your domain (godaddy for example).
Your ISP's provided DSL router may have the ports closed to incoming traffic, part of the built-in firewall, but that's not a problem.
Do you plan to use a "web-server" (another computer) or your everyday computer? Shouldn't really matter either way actually, other than bandwidth issues you may encounter.
Once your domain is registered you shouldn't have any problems.

Well, yes and no.
The previous answers get to the details of registering a domain name and setting the firewall to pass port 80 traffic, but there is more to it than that.
You can set everything up and still not be able to host a site if your ISP does to you what it does to me. And that is to give you a private IP address, NOT a public IP address. You need find out if you have a public IP address.
To check this, you have to find out what IP address your modem has (this will not be the same as your computer's IP address if you use a firewall or router). Private IP's are in the 192.168.x.y range or in the 10.0.x.y. range. Public addresses are almost everything else.

You may need to get a "Static IP Address" from your ISP in order for this to work. Especially since your domain registrar will ask you for the hosting IP for your domain.

You also need to check and see if your ISP allows you to host a webserver. Some do not allow you to do this (even if you technically can) if it is a commercial website. (i.e. You make money off of their Internet Connection)

one other tidbit to kbug answer (great one btw) is that you may need to open up the port 80 on the dsl device. Most DSL devices have an integrated firewall that typically only lets outbound traffic go through. You may need to adjust this and let inbound port 80 (www traffic) through as well. TX

setup for a LAN/information superhighway must be as accompanied: I-internet connection to modem, modem(via ethernet) to router(interior the uplink RJ-40 5 slot), connect the computers to between the (oftentimes) 4 final RJ-40 5 slots. Your router ought to assign a subnet ip handle of 192.168.a million.* to the networked computers; the place the * represents some huge type between 3 and 254 different than for, i think of, the huge type 127. as quickly as this setup is done type in 192.168.a million.a million on your URL container on your information superhighway browser. the default username is left sparkling with a password "admin". There must be help information available as quickly as you get into your router's setup. confirm NAT is setup. be certain you do not have MAC filtering grew to become on (a minimum of till you understand the thank you to apply it). Poke around and characteristic relaxing. in case you mess something up you may continually in simple terms "fix production unit defaults".
