You are supposed to kiss the ring whenever you formally meet any Bishop. As the Pope is the Bishop of Rome you kiss his ring.
Any similarity between kissing his ring and bashing the bishop is purely coincidental.

I'm not meant to kiss anyone's ring. If I meet the Pope, I'll shake his hand out of respect, but I won't kiss his ring. If other people want to do that, that's their prerogative, but I won't do it.

That's the catholic tradition. Same for Bishops. I wouldn't put my lips on that ring though! I don't know where it's been, who else's lips have been on it, and I'm not paying that degree of homage to any human man! Not unless he returns the favor by kissing my big toe. Then we can be equals.
