1. He never should've been given the job, he wasn't the best candidate. In fact, he was the worst but was appointed anyway by a timid and out-of-touch English FA who feared the reprisals from a xenophobic Press for appointing a non-English manager again after the perceived failure of the previous Swedish incumbent. See 3.
2. This meant a mid-table and very average (if we're being kind) club manager was given the job of managing an international team with a collection of alleged top-class players. His previous team (Middlesbrough) were nothing and tactics, formations, team cohesion and footballing intelligence had no part in his management methods.
3. The England team believes itself to be beyond criticism due to the constant hyping of their importance by the football media in England. See 4.
4. Alot has been made about the systems and formations, usually by the same football media and their 'build 'em up knock 'em down' mentality. As hinted at by other coaches, this isn't the most important factor in international football; rather that the team is capable of controlling the ball, playing as a cohesive unit and adapting, using their combined football experience and intelligence, to many scenario that crop up during the course of a match or a tournament.
5. England are conspicuous amongst the so-called leading football nations in their inability to achieve 4., even with the massive influence of overseas players have had over the last 15 years.
6. All of the above leads to constant disappointment for their fans who cannot understand why such an exciting and continentally successful club league can't produce a national team that lives up to their expectations. This is largely because of 1., 2., 3., 4. and 5.

You cant blame one guy for a loss.
is there any football team that has never lost? probably not.
perhaps some decisions were incorrect, but its all in the process of cementing a team together.
think about it, intl football aint the same as club football. the pool of players to pick for the nat team is somewhat similar for a long time, so its worth trying to puzzle combinations.
but of course not for crucial games like that one against croatia.
you cant put all the blame on the coaches. its the unity of the team.
