If you start out making $9.80/hour, you're doing good as a pharmacy tech. You don't need to go to school to be a pharmacy tech, you just need to learn on the job. Pharmacy tech schools are a rip off.

If you can get into billing, it pays better.

When I started 3 years ago at a retail pharmacy chain in the Boston area, my pay was $8 an hour. After 3 months it went up to $8.25. Once I was there for about 9 months I was store certified and I got a $1 raise. So on my 1 year anniversary I was up to $9.25 an hour. My raise brought me to $9.53 an hour, and my second year raise brought me up to $9.83 an hour. I'm now earning $10.21 an hour and I've been there 3 years. All my training was on the job. I am MA state certified and will be taking the national exam in March.

It depends on where you work and whether or not you are already a trained technician, in hospitals they can make good money, if you are untrained you should start out in a Walmart Pharmacy, they will train you, several years ago they started out about $7.50 or so an hour and within several years you are up to about $10.00 an hour. However if you don't want to pay for the training Walmart is a good place to start.
Good Luck

Average starting uncertified pharm tech pay is between $8 and $9. Most pharmacies do raise your salary after a certain period of time or if you become certified.
