ok so I'm trying to understand the family planning method. I know it's not fool-proof and there's a chance I could get pregnant (and yes I'm prepared to raise another child should that happen).

So, is this correct? I have my period right now, just started today, it will probably be completely finished by Tuesday or Wednesday (Oct.17th - 18th). so if I have sex on the 20th, 21st, or 22nd, I probably won't get pregnant right?

Yes i realise this is the 'trying to conceive' section, I just figured you people who are trying to get pregnant would know this best.

No sex day 10 - 18. Every women ovulates at a different time and 18 would make it safe. So from your first day of your period count out the days and be careful 10-18.

This is my standard answer......... go get a book called Taking Charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler
This book will help you with all of your menstrual and conception questions. It’s for all women - not just women trying to conceive. It covers everything from temperature to mucus checking, etc.. It will help you understand your body and all the myths about it. It will help you time when you are ovulating and the best times to conceive – or not! It tells you how to figure out your cycle and what to expect. My husband and I tried for a year to conceive and nothing happened. The first month I used the book we conceived right away. Now I am due Feb 2. It's about knowing your body and knowing when you are fertile or not. You can pick and choose what you do with your info. Good luck and don't listen the all the myths!

I used to use that method back when hubby and I weren't TTC - actually it was one of five methods we used haha We did condoms, pull out, rhythm method, spermicide (on comdoms), and birth control pills just to be safe! With the rhythm method you can have sex up to about 9 days after your period - I say 9 because at day 14 you usually ovulate, but remember that sperm lives up to 4/5 days. If I were you, I'd also use the pull out method for added 'safety'.

No- you wouldn't be safe those days!! If you have a 28 day cycle (like me) I would normally ovulate on day 13 (13 days after I started my period NOT after it stops) sooooo if you have sex then and sperm can live up to 5 days you are at risk of getting pregnant.

The later in your cycle the better to avoid pregnancy.

If I were you to be safe I would refrain from having intercourse starting on day 14 of your cycle through like day 22 or something like that. Some people ovulate on time some ovulate very late.

i think you are safe for 2 weeks after your period. what you can do is get an ovulation test and for a few months test your ovulation cycle and you can know approximately when you can have sex and when you have to abstain.
