During the Revolution they wanted a scapegoat and Marie Antoinette was it. Some British folk wanted to black mail the royals and printed pamphlets claiming she was a lesbian. King Louis ordered these to be destroyed, but some made it into the Bastille, and were found when it was stormed.
For many years after these rumors where believed. It's only in this day and age, that people are more open to the idea that she was just a young girl, who became queen by accident, and she can be forgiven for not knowing what she was doing. (spending all that money on gambling, shoes, parties etc.)

When Marie Antoinette was queen, france was going through a revolution. France wanted to rid itself of royalty and aristocracy. Plus, Marie Antoinette did not care that much for her people. She spended large amounts of money and had the best of everything. During that time, peasants were STARVING and even could not afford bread.
There was a rumor that she said," Let them have cake."
But most historians do not believe that she actually said that. Radicals made that up to make the commoners madder than what they really were.

Why the French Don't Like Marie Antoinette
(Originally Published Early 1900's)
A. D. 1755-1793
QUEEN OF FRANCE
To summarize her misfortunes, she was born with the Lisbon earthquake, when 60,000 people perished; Married with an attendant catastrophe on the main public square of Paris that cost the lives of 1,200 subjects and wounded 2,000 more; Carted in a tumbril to the guillotine, and dying like a condemned felon on the spot where her nuptials were so awfully celebrated such is the biography of Marie Antoinette. She was envied for her beauty, and pitied for her misfortunes. She was remarked for her pride on the throne, and admired for her courage in the dungeon.
If we epitomize her history with more attention to detail, we shall find it scarcely less sad: Her departure from Vienna at fifteen, to go, among strangers and enemies, to a husband who did not want to marry her and for seven years did not treat her as a wife. The catastrophe at her wedding;the story of the diamond necklace; the visit of the fishwives to Versailles and their capture of the royal family; the attempted escape and the recapture, in which her hair turned white; the assault on the Tuileries and slaughter of the Swiss Guards; the prison-life in the towers of the Temple; Death-in-life in the Conciergerie; The "trial of the Widow Capet"; The beheading in the public square. By the nobles she was received as "the Austrian woman", by the people she was slain as "the Austrian she-wolf." We have seen, in the life of Maria Theresa, a strain of pride and persistence, trying to the sensibilities of other people; This quality was the legacy of a reigning Queen to a consort-Queen, and the daughter, therefore, received a sad inheritance. On the other hand, there is a mean streak in human nature at large which we may call scapegoatism. With her domineering personality and her Austrian proclivities in politics, never to be veiled or smoothed over, it was easy, when the entire French people looked for a scapegoat, to find Marie Antoinette. As to her chronology, she came into the world, of course, long after Maria Theresa and Catherine II, whose lives we have just reviewed; but she died before Catherine.
Such a sad story from a remarkable woman, the name Marie Antoinette Jos sincerely e Jeanne de Lorraine, Arch-duchess of Austria.

Well the French people disliked both Marie and Louis because of their ignorance of what was going on with the third estate. But the fact that Marie was Austrian added another big strike against her.

Marie Antoinette was a selfish, self-centered person. She did not care about the French people, but only of herself.

Ever since the French revolution, France wanted to be a republic and wanted things to be equal and not have a group of peple who were considered better than everyone. Which is rediculous because even republic, socialistic, and communistic countries have a class of people higher, and the US has a huge econo-sociological class "problem". And the higher class in these types are called the government.

No, she wasn't "undesirable," and he or she wasn't accountable of many of the failings she became accused of, yet she wasn't very vibrant and did no longer comprehend that her extravagance performed very badly in France. even with the undeniable fact that, notwithstanding if she had carried out so, historic events have been overtaking her, and that's fairly available -- possibly, rather -- that she could have lost her existence interior the worry besides. There might have been no steps she might have taken to shop herself. As for sources, i like Antonia Fraser's biography of Marie Antoinette, which became revealed approximately 10 years in the past.

Well she was the last Queen of France, and in fact her way of life helped to the Revolution. They Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette spend lots of money on partys for the nobility, when the France citizens were hungry, and to support their way of life they only made grow the taxes... I can't think how they couldn't hate her and her husband...

because at the time, the big rival of france was the austrian hapsburg empire, and marie antionette was the daughter of the hapsburg empress. so right off, she was at a disadvantage. she was also teen when she married louis, and she was never expected to rule, so she never got any education, specifically tailored to ruling a country, in her childhood. so she had no idea what to do, she was in a foreign country were people looked down on her, so she did what she was best at: partying and shopping. she spent so much that she was called "mme deficit"
now her husband louis, wasnt exactly all that bright either, and he had no idea how to rule the country either ( but he insisted on trying to do it himself anyways), but rather than blame their french king, they blamed his austrian wife.
and then, of course, to create more hatred, they invented her most famous phrase (which she never said) "let them eat cake"
and then to complete piss everyone off, when there was a particularly bad famine and people were dying, there was a false rumour circulating that she bought a ruby necklace for the same price that would have been able to feed some million starving pesants. so they stormed versaille. and then they chopped off her head.

They thought she was too flighty, wasted too much money, and didn't really care about them, but her and her husband were beheaded mostly because the french didn't want to be ruled by monarchs anymore.
