i've never brought one before and it's been sugguested it would be useful to the work I am doing at the moment. I'm confused by the many varieties...?

An Essential English Dictionary is designed to support learners of English whose first language is not English. It only has words that are in regular common useage. A full English Dictionary has a very much larger range of words including many obsolete and esoteric ones.

Read them both - it might teach you to use AN when followed by a word beginning with a vowel.

IE: AN Essential English Dictionary and AN English dictionary.

Any type of English dictionary will show you that English (and all other nationality adjectives) start with a capital letter in english -oops, English.
Ask the person who suggested you get a dictionary to recommend a suitable one.
If you're a non-native English user, a bilingual dictionary could also be useful.

plain old English dictionary probably contains all the non essential words, i.e rude ones like boobies and willies, where Essential English dictionary just has the boring words you need to use every day
