Its fine to sleep on your back or your stomach clear though. I was panicked over then when i was first pregnant because i can only sleep on my back to relieve pain.

I asked a few doctors and did some research. Its not true that its unsafe. your baby will not suffocate or lose oxygen fron crimping you artery. You also cannot squish him by laying on your stomach.

You can get dizzy or have your limbs fall asleep from the weight of the baby and uterus on your arteries, you can also end up with really sore kindeys. But trust me, you realize these things are happening while you're asleep and you wake up from the discomfort and roll over.

Every doctor and artical on the subject have told me that its a medical misconception that many hyperactive nurses and poorly written magazine articals have that theres any danger posed to the fetus.

If baby's suffered or died from mothers who slept on their backs or stomachs, then the human species simply wouldnt survive :)

At this point you're too small to even notice the weight of the uterus. Once you're really popped out and showing you'll find its uncomfy to sleep on your back, and will prefer your side. Even though it hurts.

Trust me. Iam going through it now.

I think I read that at about 16 weeks you should stop sleeping on your back... it's all about how big the baby is an whether or not it will cut off your circulation. My strategies for sleeping (I'm 28 weeks) have been that I put a pillow behind my back so I can't really roll all the way over - or halfway thru the night I prop a bunch of pillows behind me and sleep in a half sitting up position - like if you had your feet stretched out on the couch. that way the baby can't cut off the circulation in your legs.

And believe me, you don't want to do that. I've woken up absolutely tingly all over - my arms, legs... it's freaky. And not good for the baby.

You're still fine on your back. The aorta runs from the heart straight down the center of the body. When baby gets larger and you lie on your back, the baby will compress the aorta and you will begin to feel sick pretty soon as your blood flow is restricted. For now though, you should still be ok. Getting comfortable only gets worse though. I recommend getting a large body pillow and using it as a side sleeper. Placing an extra pillow between your knees and a few more in the small of your back help too. The trick really is in having a lot of pillows and building a nest to sleep in that supports your legs and your back.

The answer to that lies soley on you, dear. . . There are no hard or fast rules on this. . It is a case to case basis. As long as you are comfortable with it, go ahead.

Difficulty in sleeping increases as your tummy enlarges. This I experienced around 20 weeks.I find it easier to lie down on my left. Also you will find out that getting up from the bed is doubly harder once you get to your seventh month onwards. What I do is I go to a sitting position near the edge of the bed. I do this sideways with my arms supporting my body. Once I'm in a seated position, standing up wont be that difficult. . . .

You will also expect painful leg cramps around 28 weeks and onwards. Raising the legs against the wall can prevent cramps. In the event of a cramp. Do a "Dorsi-Flexion". This helps a lot in relaxing.

Doctors don't advise that you sleep on your back because of the weight of your growing uterus -- and the child within -- presses down on major arteries and blood vessles which in turn limits the blood flow to the baby.

If you must sleep on your back, try propping a pillow just under one side of you so that you're not sleeping flat on your back, but rather slightly tipped to one side -- it doesn't sound comfortable, I know, but once you get the positioning of the pillow just right you'll find yourself resting at much more ease.

Also, the further you get along in your pregnancy, you may find the more pillows you acquire. I know I went from having one to seven... One between the knees, one at my back, one under my stomach (tucked to the side that I was laying on)... and so on. You just do what you can to get comfortable.

Try sleeping on your side holding a pillow in your arms and one between your legs.
I found a nursing pillow (the ones shaped like a "u") to be very comfortable to sleep against or have between my legs. Someone got me the nursing pillow for my shower at 7 months. I wished I'd had it sooner because it was firmer than regular pillows and contoured to fit the body.

i don't know what time it is that you have to start sleeping on your side. but i would recomend that you start trying to sleep on your side now. That way when you have to start sleeping on your side you will be comfortable. We bought over size pillows that i hug and put between my legs. it helps me and then i prop a pillow on my back so that i don't roll at night. i have done this with my last two children and doing now that i am about 6 weeks with my third. good luck and i hope you find your comfort zone .

As long as you are comfortable, sleep on your back. As you get bigger, though, it will be uncomfortable for you and the baby, at which time you should sleep on your side. Try getting one of those body pillows. It made side-sleeping much more comfy for me when I was pregnant (I still use one, actually!).

You can sleep any way you want until its too uncomfortable to sleep in that position. The problem with sleeping on yoru back is that as your baby grows, it cuts off the blood supply to them. Myself, being 35 weeks pregnant, it's incredibly uncomfortable for me to sleep on my back -- too much pressure on my spine.

I like to sleep on my side with a pillow between my legs. That helps!

Good luck!
