Most of the above statements are good reasons, especially while giving a test or viewing something on TV (film). If students are working in groups, the teacher sometimes wants to observe how well they're getting along. Another reason might be that the teacher has work to do (while you do your assigned worksheets) and doesn't want anyone to know he/she is behind! Yes...it happens to most of us!
If they're trying to communicate w/the class, however, they should be wherever students can see them most easily and be heard. This is usually NOT the back of the room.

I would ask -- where is the "back" of my room? I have visual aids (that I use regularly) on every wall (except the windows ;-). My students sit at grouped desks and chairs face in all directions. When giving direct instruction, I move about (this helps kids keep active attention and helps me to check in with kids who might not understand something). When students are engaged in learning activities, I also move all around the room, checking in on progress.

Well since he is the teacher and you are in his class he can pretty much stand wherever he wants. Even on top of the desk if he pleases to do that.

A teacher really can walk about as they please I s'pose. Though if the teach is at the back of the room most of the students will turn to the teacher,
