okay, yesterday I asked this question, but didn't get to finish bacause the bell rang.... (yeah, I'm at school) but I'll just start over, cuz I REALLY REALLY NEED HELP!!!
I'm supposed to design a device that will protect a raw egg, GRADE A, (not that its really important to know what kind of egg it is... LOL) But, it will drop from a 12 FOOT height to a concrete floor. The only materials that I'm allowed is about 9 sheets of "8.5 X 11" paper or either polyvinyl white glue, rubber cement, or a glue stick. But if I ask for extra paper it takes off from my grade.... So if anyne has an idea for a design, I would GREATLY APPRECIATE it!!!!!!!! Thanx!

Check out web sites like the one below for how others have solved this problem in the past. Not everyone has the same restrictions that you do, but there are some creative solutions that can be applied to your case.

Two thoughts come to mind. First, are you allowed to apply anything directly to the egg? Coating the egg in the glue will reinforce the shell and help keep it safe.

Second, try folding the paper into cushioning shapes. The origami Fortune Teller shape comes to mind for a start. With alterations it may prove useful. Check the second link below for how one is made.

Good luck and happy landings!!

With only paper and glue, I'm not really sure. If you had string, you could fashion some sort of parachute. If you had a box, you could scrunch up the paper and pack the egg on top of the scrunched-up paper in the box. You indicate that if you ask for more paper, you will be docked points. One question is can you ask for other stuff (e.g. string, box). A second question is how many points will you have deducted from your grade. I'm assuming if the egg breaks, you get 0, in which case your choice is probably more likely between (for example) 90 (successful drop, points off for extra material) and 0 (unsuccessful drop) rather than between 100 (successful drop, no points off) and 90 (successful drop, points off for extra material).

First thing I would do would be to coat the entire eggshell with glue (like Elmers' Glue). Let it dry. Do it again. Let it dry. Do it again.

Then, I'd wad up the 9 sheets of paper into tight, scrunchy little balls. I'd coat the little balls with glue, and glue the little balls onto the eggshell, so the egg is sitting in the middle of a cushion of scrunched-up paper.

I don't know if this will work, but good luck.

I had to do this in school and what i did was make a hard shelling out of the paper and rubber cement to make a nice protective shell then used a whole bottle of rubber cement around it that should reduce shock eh....or you could just throw it at your teacher =P

Oooh, I remember that project. Taking physics?

Try making a cone with one of the sheets of paper, and weighing it down heavily on one side with other paper, so you can make a cradle for your egg. Also, take a couple of pieces of paper and try to make a parachute to have it fall slower. When you drop it, drop it with the cone end pointed downward so that when it hits, it hits and teh point and falls to the weighted side.

Good luck!

Check out origami. There are certain folds that have greater strength to withstand a drop such as the one you mentioned.
