My sales are £11m p.a. I don't sell online at the moment, but hope it could be come a serious sales channel. PayPal has a reputation for being pricey - is this true? Are there any other systems I should consider using? What are the pros and cons?

Remember, you have to spend money to make money. There are fees associated with Paypal, of course. BUT, it is the most used of all the online payment plans. It provides the easiest and most convenient way for both the buyer and the seller. I use it on my website and Ebay auctions, and probably wouldn't have a business without it. Waiting for someone to send that money order which doesn't always come...you have to make it quick and easy for those impulse buys. And some are afraid to use their credit card online, but Paypal enables them to just enter the info in one place, and no one else will see the credit card info. 85% of my sales are made through Paypal, and I love it! As a shopper, I won't buy from a small seller if they don't take Paypal. It affords more protection for the buyer.

Your best bet is to use both systems and let the customer decide which they prefer. When you consider the fact that you're losing all the expense of maintaining a store or publishing paper brochures, it makes sense to maximise your sales possibilities, and you don't want a user with a full shopping basket turing around because they don't like one or other of the payment processors. More sales, even at a lower profit, increases overall profit, so don't worry about the costs just yet. Get both systems going and then once you have regular customers, ask them what they'd prefer.

Paypal.
Here's some info:
Is PayPal Right For You?

It's for businesses of all sizes that want a secure, convenient, and low-cost online payment solution. PayPal's variable transaction fees are priced lower than most merchant account providers-as low as 1.9% + $0.30 per transaction for approved businesses. And fees are based on completed transactions only-there are no setup fees or gateway fees. It's quick and easy to set up and incorporate into an online sales operation. The sign-up and installation process can be completed within minutes, and integrates seamlessly into any existing website.

It helps protect you against fraud. As an industry leader in fraud prevention, PayPal has one of the lowest loss rates in the online retail industry as well as some of the most advanced fraud detection techniques and a commitment to fighting chargebacks to help merchants avoid losses.

It offers flexible payment options. Merchants can accept all four major credit cards, debit cards, electric checks, and PayPal account balances - in six different currencies. Customers have the flexibility to pay a merchant any way they want through a service they trust.

It extends your reach. With millions of users in 45 countries, PayPal is the payment method of choice. You are opening the door to a tremendous network of savvy online shoppers who believe that it's an easy and safe way to pay for goods and services.

Then you are going to need a merchant account to accept Visa/MC. If PayPal isn't accepted in your country, then I think you might have a hard time setting up a site that will accept credit cards.
