Here's a really interesting website that will give you all the info you want. In short, the idea of the mafia started over one-thousand years ago in Sicilly, and came to the US at the turn of the 20th century due to the influence of sicillian immigrants. check it out.

The Italian Mafia started in Sicily in the 1800's. The New York Mafia started in the early 1900's. Sorry, don't know the exact years.

I think the Italian Mafia started during the second world war, to fight against the Germans and carried on from there.
