I have found it easiest to let them play a bit, eat and then cake/ice cream, play some more while cleaning up food mess, then open gifts.

Eat icecream, open presents, go play.
If you have them play first then it will be frustrating for the kids to stop and watch your son open presents. Their very young and would rather play their little hearts out.
Also if you save the playing for last if the noise becomes too much for any of their parents they will be able to leave and not have to wait around for your child to open presensts.
Have fun and Happy Birthday to your son.

When they get there you should probably begin to serve them, let them eat. No complaining then. Then let them play for a while then announce presents will be opened. Open presents, then let them play some more. There won't be any arguements!
Have a good time, and good luck to you!

yes, let them eat first then play..if you have time then open presents.
We usually open presents at home...the kids are usually so much into playing they don't like to get called from it to watch the bday kid open presents.

Play first! If they eat first, then you run the risk of one of them (and you KNOW it's gonna happen!!) throwing up whatever they've eaten! Then they can calm down while they're eating, or calm down in preparation for eating, while opening presents! But definitely PLAY first!!!
Have fun!
