he could be playing a fantasy or simulation game. sometimes, in the Sims for example, characters will need to eat, sleep, bathe, use the restroom, and do all of the other normal daily activities that we real people do. ask him what the name of the game is. ask him if it is a simulation game or what type of game it is. it is possible that he is being completely serious.

Maybe they are not really sleeping... but DEAD!
To a 12 year old, this could possibly be mistaken for sleep, but more likely, he is subconsciously avoiding the issue of death by assuming they are alseep.
The unfortunate truth is that many video game characters do die, often horrible deaths, but luckily they can usually be brought back to life by pressing the 'reset' button.
If that doesn't work, then a tickle bunny may help add levity to the situation, but on the other hand might cause further psychological damage, especially if your son develops an association between tickle bunnies and death. Future tickle bunny threats might therefore be misconstrued as death threats and thereby create an unmendable rift in your relationship with your son.
I suggest you send him to military school. That will fix him right up.

He is serious, the people in the game are sleeping... just like the people in the TV do when you don't watch them.

Seriously, perhaps he is playing an online game with other real people. Many times these games are pickup (i.e. play with who ever is online at the time) but perhaps he plays with a regular group or team, they may be asleep at odd times as they could be physically located anywhere in the world. Perhaps they agreed upon times that work or don't work. Tickle him anyway.
