If anything, women are more conscious that they have to pack more quality time with their kids into a shorter time frame. Their "maternal instincts" are actually functioning at a higher degree than previously, because they need to be connected to their kids even when they can't be there physically.

What is actually a very good change for children, is the change that is bringing their fathers involved more in their day to day lives. My Dad only got involved with us on those rare occasions when Mum was overwhelmed by a problem with one of us, and Dad was asked to step in. Nowadays Dads are interacting with their children every day, taking over some of the formerly "woman's" role of nurturer and tutor. This is a big plus for both kids and dads.

So maybe instead of worrying about "maternal instincts" you should be rejoicing that the changes in society are bringing about a resurgence in the importance of "paternal instincts".

I'm not really sure. I'm a nanny 3 days a week, and it makes me wonder how stay at home parents do it all day every day....i would go nuts! I don't think I have maternal instinct...I like kids, I get along with them, but I don't want children of my own, and I don't claim to instinctively know what to do with them all the time. I think how you are with children is a learned behavior, and I don't think many people are really born with any kind of parental instinct, but that's just me.

I have a very strong maternal instinct, I am a mother to 3 (hopefully 4 in the not too distant future) Why on earth would we want to compete with men? They spend enough time competing with each other, so why would we get into it? I think men competing with mothers would be much more entertaining!! lol.xxxx

No, it's not lost, but other qualities have moved forward for women, so that one's not the primary anymore...

Women will always be nurturers and always have a 'maternal instinct' (in general) since we are the ones that bear the offspring...it doesn't go away simply because a woman's primary role in this world is no longer all about bearing children...

What does maternal instinct have to do with competing with men? That is like asking why so many men are wanting to behave more like women now instead of the men they were born to be.

If men lived their lives according to what the bible dictates, then men nor women would have to compete with each other for anything.

No we haven't lost our maternal instincts. We just don't feel the need to brag about our attributes like men do.

Have you been wearing ear plugs? Or do you live on an island with a population of one?

P.S. Personally, I don't "compete" with men. I do my best and it just happens to be better at times (many times, actually). Gender shouldn't matter, just whoever is the best PERSON for the job.

It's still there. Some women have louder devices leading them now. It's over shadowing their natural ability to lead themselves from within. Sometimes the old fashion way is the best way!
