For the same reason that you always look at your watch when somebody asks you the time, although you've only just taken a look at it. You tend to remember details of this nature in relation to yourself and your immediate concerns -- i.e. am I late for an appointment, do I have to fill this form in by tomorrow. When you need to get the date down on paper, you want to reassure yourself that you are doing so correctly and factually.

I never know the date, I always forget it! Something to do with being a stay at home mum now i think, i live by birthdays and events rather than a day to day basis!

Maybe you do. I work with the date so consistantly in everything I do, both on computers and manually, that I am never confused as to which date this is.
